Re: "Well paying jobs"

Combined we make less than some of those amounts and we have a house which we paid for ourselves and we also paid for our wedding ourselves and live comfortably at the age of 25 (we just turned 26) so I consider any of those to be good money.

Re: "Well paying jobs"

It depends on where you live and the lifestyle you want.

I have single friends outside of NY making $40K - $90K (Texas, GA, VA) and they are doing VERY well for themselves (huge apartments & car payments) plus they are able to save money each month. Then I have single friends in NYC making $150K - $325K and it's a struggle. A married friend in Texas bought a gorgeous new house for under $250K and is making enough to allow his wife to stay home with their son....and I am pretty sure he is still under $150K.

The more you make the more your spend.

Also, the guy I know making $325K has an ex wife (alimony) and two kids (child support) + his ex got him to pay the mortgage for the house she lives in with the kids (not in NY). He rents a place in Manhattan and he's dating so that's more $$$$.

A married friend in NYC and her husband clear about $225K between them but they have 2.5 kids (3rd will be here soon) and a nanny + mortgage and maintenance for their 2 bedroom Manhattan co-op & a car payment (soon to be minivan I guess). They are house hunting now and mentioned how pricey all the houses are - even with their combined buying power.

Re: "Well paying jobs"

For me to day my DH has a well paying job would mean that we could maintain our lifestyle without me working at all and not incur additional debt doing that. DH makes a good salary but for me to say it was well paying would need to be about 20-30K more.

Re: "Well paying jobs"

Wow!!

I would love to make that "low" number right now. I am a new teacher, just trying to survive. I work nights at CVS to pick up some slack.

DH builds repairs custom motorcycles and works weekends with my BIL. We do not make anything near that lowest number COMBINED!!!

This is why I need to move out of NY Chat Icon this is hopeless

Re: "Well paying jobs"

this topic is hard to answer as everybody has different lifestyles, spending habits, etc..

depending on what you do and how you live, even a low abount could be considered well paided

I feel sometimes like I live in Pverty based on what I see in these posts and surveys...

A good income is less those those above to me. Not much less but we do not make a 3 figure income and we dont suffer....well we cannot afford a nice house here on LI but we are ok in other ways.....

Wow, I was thinking the same thing. I make less than what is up there, as well as Dh.( well.. not much less), and we own a home and are able to afford LI, and go on a vacation a year and are able to afford to go out. So I consider what we make to be decent but compared to the above poster, I guess we are poverty stricken....lol

I think everyones opinion on what is well-paying depends on the lifestyle they were brought up in, not just if you can afford to live with out struggling. I think people are conditioned to hold a certain level of weath/income/lifestyle normal...and we are all conditioned very differently.

I agree with the first two statements here. DH and I make combined one of the lower amounts there, but at the same time he has a job with a pension and great benefits, so that helps as well.

I do NOT agree with the last statement. I grew up "with money" and my son, while he will not go hungry, he will not grow up with everything that I did, not many people do. I don't think that if you are brought up with a certain lifestyle that you cannot adjust to something different. I am proud that we work really hard for our lifestyle, like the rest of my family did to get where they are.

Re: "Well paying jobs"

I think some people are confusing the OP "you OR DH well paying job" with "combined" income for the family.

As an individual, I think anything over $90K is good money. I think individual income of $150K is VERY good money.

Whether you are struggling because of lifestyle, alimony, etc... it has nothing to do with how good your income is. Some people are in debt with incomes over $250K (That's still a HIGH income!!).

Re: "Well paying jobs"

im well paid in comparison to average salary in people in the tri state area.

however, im still "just" making it with my house and expenses.
(dh and i make about the same $)
i think if we were both making $150-200k each, as opposed to what were currently making, then we would be doing well and would be very comfortable.

i know it sounds ludicrous, but thats how it is.

FWIW, I'm not stating that my DH has a "well paying job", but if someone else states that they themselves or their SO has a "well paying job", whether it's on here or elsewhere, I assume that they are pulling in a quarter mil. minimum, no matter where they live (and that's alone, not combined income.)

Re: "Well paying jobs"

I don't know, it so much depends on the industry...I guess I would say $80+ for my friends at my age (under 30), but when my brother got out of law school last year we all figured any position for him under $150 would be low paying because of the industry and level firms. When I got out of college I remember thinking $50+ was an amazing offer.

i think i would consider any of those amounts listed as "well paying".... although it does depend on a lot. your age, the lifestyle you want to have, the industry you're in...

I don't think there is a one size fits all answer- everyone has there own lifestyle and wants, needs

some people might live great on less then $100K- some people might struggle with $200K

I def agree with the more you make the more your spend- for myself I am trying to get out of that cycle and live on less and save more-

I agree. I think the answer is relative. Whatever you are comfortable with for where you live is the answer. Everyone is different.

Re: "Well paying jobs"

This topic was eye-opening for me. I forget that there are such high paying industries out there. DH and I are social workers, so we struggle to earn a decent living. In my opinion, it seems that the more money you have, the more money you spend, it's all relative.

Re: "Well paying jobs"

I guess I was asking because I see alot of posts saying "I/DH has a well paying job", but that means different things to different people. As we can see from the responses, some people think 50k is well paid, while others think 250k is well paid.
I think DH is well paid, but others may not. Just wanted opinions

out of curiosity, what kind of jobs are these making 250K? i assume its also relative to where you live as im sure manahattan salaries are considerabely higher than LI. Also, years of experience ofcourse is taken into consideration.

The lawyers and doctors in my family make that.
