Well that escalated quickly

Just when the vaccine was giving the world so much hope, this new strain pops up and now it is in the US. I give up. I truly feel like this will NEVER end and this is life forever. So depressed tonight, after feeling really hopeful the last few weeks. Chat Icon

The new strain does not diminish the effectiveness of the vaccine.

I read that scientists in the UK are very concerned that this variant will successfully dodge the vaccine and immunity. Moderna and Pfizer say they suspect it will still work, but they aren't positive. I truly hope they still are. If not this is devastating.

They've also said the new strain is no more deadly, which is good, but that it spreads more easily.

I'm praying this year is better because more than anything, I'm so sad for my kids. This is no way to go through childhood and school isn't the same, it's all so heartbreaking. I can't believe we're all having to live through this nightmare. Chat Icon

I feel the same way. I think for me it's more like the realization of the brainwashing that this was "2020", like 2021 would be so much better, but in reality it's 3 days away and it's going to be the same BS next week. This holiday season has been depressing being away from family and missing people. Accepting that 2021 is just the same sh!t different day is really getting to me. Even though I KNEW that but with the vax I had hope and now I'm losing it. Even though I know viruses mutate and all of that. It's like all the good news got sucked away with all the negativity coming out from the UK.

Well that escalated quickly

I saw a bunch of antivaxxers on FB today screaming that this vaccine is ineffective just like the flu shot because a nurse got Covid despite the vaccine... um, does anyone know the period of efficacy? Isn't the flu shot two weeks? And, if it's the same with the Covid Vaccine, then it hasn't been 2 weeks. Also: aren't there 2 doses? Chat Icon

Re: Well that escalated quickly

Coronaviruses are naturally hard to work with and get an effective vaccine for. All my cats have coronaviruses. They have been working on it for YEARS.

That being said, why didn’t the US block travel from the UK? We have been in strict lockdown for about 2 months. It’s the only thing that’s working. Our numbers have started to go down this week, but let’s see what happens in 2 weeks. I am going completely crazy, but I just want to get this over with. We knew the second wave was coming. I assume that the US is behind Europe by a few weeks, so I suspect it will get bad soon.

But maybe the vaccine will be enough. Nobody seems to have definitely said that it will work against the new strain.

The new strain does not diminish the effectiveness of the vaccine.

How effective is it if you need to get more than one shot and you still have to wear a mask until god knows when?

They know NOTHING about this vaccine.

Exactly and more fear mongering from the media.
What WILL they do after this is all over? There will be nothing for them to talk about or scare the public with. Chat Icon

Honestly, do they really know? If it was so effective, why do you still have to wear a mask? Why is there no end time for them if you get the vaccine?

It has been known that this virus would mutate as coronaviruses have been around and mutating for years.

The virus will never go away and will mutate but they hope that the current vaccine will lessen the impact to someone who catches a coronavirus strain.

I plan on getting vaccinated - but I’m towards the bottom of the list - there’s a good chance it will be needed to attend sporting events, concerts and even travel.

And I do feel that once we can interact normally again we are all going to get sick with something since we haven’t been exposed to new germs for so long.

It will always be out there, we'll always have to walk among it.
The goal is to lessen the impact of it with treatments and the vaccine. Like we've done with countless other viruses
But it's not going away and definitely not in 2021

You need two doses because that is how it provides 95% efficacy. After one dose you will still recieve protection, just not as much.
As for the mask wearing, masks are not forever. Out of 330 million Americans, only 2.5 million are vaccinated so far. That's less than 1% of the population. Until we reach herd immunity, masks and some level of social distancing are required. 95% is not 100%, so until most of the population is protected, there is a risk of spread, hence the masks.
Quite honestly, I don't think anyone unwilling to even consider the vaccine is allowed to complain about mask wearing or social distancing.

The WHO says it will become an endemic, like the flu and colds. The good thing about that is with vaccines the virus itself should lesson in severity and become no more serious than the flu or a cold. As long as this vaccine works against the new strain, I am confident life will gradually begin to return to normal sometime this summer. Not complete normal, but getting there.

Exactly and I am getting tired of "can't wait until 2020 is over". Why? Do you think at midnight this is all going to disappear? You still have to wear masks and things are not reopening because of this vaccine.

Who said anyone was complaining? It was a question as they have not come out saying when it could end but people are running for this vaccine because they think with it we will get back to normal.

Things can't reopen yet because we have only been vaccinating people since December 14th. I have said multiple times that I think the whole making grand plans for travel and Broadway for 2021 is pointless. I do think the vaccine will make things better, it will not make it go away and I believe things like concerts and Broadway are a done deal until 2022.

Yep, I agree. I think it's naïve to think that it's going to get back to any sense of normal in terms of those kind of things in 2021.

Speculating about what 2021 will be like is pointless, there are so many unknowns especially now that the vaccine is in play. I don't think COVID will ever fully go away but I think the vaccine is definitely a game changer. I'm hopeful that 2021 will slowly get better, the more people that get vaccinated the faster we can begin to return to a semblance of normalcy.

This is silly. To think that just because the strain was first discovered in the UK would mean it was isolated to the UK is ridiculous. I am sure it is and was all throughout Europe and most of the rest of the world by the time it was "discovered." The same way there are early cases of known COVID in the US before we even knew it existed in China. Locking down the US borders from the UK only would have done nothing to stop the new strain from spreading here.

Agree with all that Naturalmama and KlingKang said. My Broadway and travel plans are extensive, and they keep me happy, but they are most certainly longer-range. For now, counting blessings and hopes and plans are enough to keep us going. This vaccine is a very exciting development.

I know it’s so delusional. Jan 1st. My son will still be in this stupid hybrid model, schools will be closed most likely till the end of the year, people will still be starving and going broke, small business aren’t going to magically recover, they keep talking about these massive spikes but once midnight comes it’s all going to disappear.

Ok maybe there won’t be massive Covid deaths but the aftermath is no where near getting started never mind done. Our government can’t even pass a fukn bill, our president is non existent.

2021 is not going to be any better in terms of Global issues with this pandemic. It’s going to be what you can make of it.
