Immigrants, legal and illegal and their advocates are going to march on the streets of many cities to demand things of OUR government

If you want to take advantage of American citizen rights (right to a peaceful demonstration and freedom of speech) then don't you actually need to be a citizen?
And do they really think the government will all be like "Wow you're right we were wrong, we're sorry" because of today?

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
Ok, I don't really have an opinion on this subject because it makes my head spin, however, I was just reading newsday.com's article on this, and this particular sentence in the article just struck me as dumb....
"The bill would criminalize undocumented immigrants and anybody who assists them."
I mean, isn't already criminal that they are here if they are undocumented? Am I just stupid for thinking they're trying to pass a bill to criminalize something that is already illegal?

Rachel - that's the part I'm having a hard time understanding too. Maybe it's the fact that it would be a felony as opposed to a lesser offense? Are they adding in a clause that would punish employers?

i heard there are going to be all sorts of marches and rallies
is this wise?
All you need is cops to come out and start checking green-cards and the plan backfires

Aren't they not allowed to do that??
Also, re that, what about all the round ups happening lately with the INS. Are they allowed to walk up to anyone they want and ask for ID?

I teach and all I have noticed is a lot less students in class today.
Not sure how that is proving anything though.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
From what I read, it's mostly legal, documented immigrants doing the protesting. So I'm even MORE confused as to what the hell they're doing

Very Few students in school today. I teach HS in the city with a pretty high immigrant percentage. It should be interesting considering that we have a visit from the Deputy Chancellor!

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
A few co-workers are out (legal immigrants).
I do wonder about the overall impact, and the possible backlash. I think some of these advocates are thinking that there will be a huge economic impact (bad) but many of these people don't pay income tax anyway.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
The only thing I did notice was that N.Ocean Ave was FREE of four hundred men darting in and out of traffic, trying to get to the contractor's vehicles and there was ZERO men urinating up against the Train Tressle.
IMO, we need MORE days like this

I agree. It is already Illegal, hence being an Illegal Alien. I love how there were protesters carrying signs saying I am not a criminal.....um, if you are an illegal alien, then yes, you are.
I do wish the goverment would make it easier for people to become legal residents.

See for me, at least, this isn't even the issue with the protest today. Is this an issue every other day, yes, but for the protest, it's like, ok, you are protesting something that is already illegal, that they are just basically re-making illegal. It all seems assbackwards to me. That's what is irking me the most.
