not all of them go straight to ER, some just go to regular doctors and pay in cash for treatments...
Of course. But that's not american citizens paying the cost of immigrant healthcare. That's them paying for their own. I'm just trying to understand how they get state & federal programs to pay their healthcare if they are undocumented.

Actually they cant. I have actually called our local Social Services building and they said that if they dont have a SSN than they can not get assistance.

I thought this was interesting and relevant. From CNN today
As for complaints that many critics of immigration cite - demand for social and government services by immigrants - most economists believe that is outweighed by the increased economic activity, even if some specific school districts or public hospitals struggle with the costs associated serving the immigrant community.

Can someone tell me how undocumented immigrants get healthcare here? I'm really asking...someone posted that we are paying for their healthcare, I'm just wondering how that can happen? because if they go to an ER in a county hosp they will be treated for free. so they go to the ER when their kids have a fever or for any reason!
no wonder when the rest of us go, our insurance co gets charged $500 for an aspirin. someone has to absorb the cost!
sad but true.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
We all need to consider what exactly would happen if we were to deport them or legalize them. If you deport them, then you would need to find a workforce to replace these people. That would mean finding US citizens to do jobs they dont want to do in the first place, and by no means will they do it for the wages of an illegal immigrant. But going along with it, that would mean the same US citizen would then require health benefits. This would considerably raise the amount of money to the employer, who in turn would need to charge more to the consumer . Are we willing to pay more? If you said yes, than I encourage you to hire legitimate contractors, landscaping businesses, nannies and housekeepers, and frequent restaurants that only hire legal workers. But it comes down to the all american dollar. People are more than willing to benefit from all the luxuries of life, but dont want to pay the luxurious price.

I get what you are saying. I just wonder which cost is greater and which will give us the greater benefit. Because deporting everyone and prosecuting offenders would cost alot of money, right? But would it outweigh the benefit of making them legal, having employers have to finally pay their fair share of taxes on these workers which may in turn lower our taxes or make things better for us because more tax money is coming in? Yes, we are paying more, but do we have more to spend now? Would it outweigh the costs of the resources that are being consumed? I don't know the answers... I'm just wondering out loud.
Also I have a hard time believing that if immigrant workers were suddenly gone and their jobs were abandoned - that no one would fill those jobs. Especially if employers now have to pay decent wages.

let start by reducing the current us unemployment rate, and if we legalize them does that mean that bye bye cheap labor rates because now they will demand more right? and better jobs? NOW WHO WILL DO THE JOBS NOBODY ELSE WHATS TO DO?

I disagree. There are plenty of out of work citizens that would do ANYTHING for money to support their family. Also, as far as the healthcare, what is the difference if we have to pay for illegal immigrants to go to free clinics or ERs or if we have to pay for someone to be on government programs?

I think it's sad how all of a sudden everyone is holding up the American flag. They should want to hold our flag all the time.

I do not want to ruffle any feathers, as I am new here and do not want to overstay my welcome...
but as someone who has studied immigration law, I can say to people who say that aliens should come here "legally" that unfortunately not all visas are created equal - our country allots a certain number of legal visas to each country dpending on how "desirable" those countries are - in some countires like China (which by the way has one of the highest number of illegal aliens in this country) the wait list can be upwards of 10 years. Likewise "people who come on rafts" are usually Cubans and as long as they reach US soil they are considered "Legal" - they do not have the option of trying to file paperwork to come here legally...
just my 2 cents..sorry I hope I ddin't offend
Not offended at all. I think the facts are lost a little in what we'd like to see happen, as opposed to what actually happens. I think if we have such an issue that protests are being formed then the change needs to come from the top & LEGAL immigration needs to be re-vamped.
Alao, I wanted to add something. Many here have said that illegal immigrants, or day-labourers do job that no one else wants to. I'd like to point out that before we had such a tremendous influx of Illegals or day workers, these jobs were taken by students, and the retail was taken by students and retirees. It used to be where you went to a fast-food restaurant (or any other restaurant) that the neighbor's kid worked behind the counter, or was the bus boy, or the people who came to cut your lawn & trim your bushes graduated with your older sibling. This is no longer the case, and IMO (and it is truly an opinion) it is because the kids that are trying to make some $$ on LI need more money than we did at that age. I did not need to make more than $8/hour to pay for my essentials in HS, and still have money for car, gas & to save for Prom & such. Now students need more because everything on LI is waaaaaay over-priced. I cannot speak for the rest of the country, but for here on LI if our economy were more manageable, including taxes & general cost of living, then it would not be so necessary for an 18 year old to make $10/ hr or more at their first job.

It seems to me that many here know that deportation is not an option, and no, I do not feel good that ANYONE is living in poverty. But to me, should we not try to help our own country's impoverished first, then try to help others?

I'm sure many of the workers at Wendy's or McDonalds would love to have a landscaping job for $10 an hour. And that pay is by no means poverty level.
