Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'

I do not want to ruffle any feathers, as I am new here and do not want to overstay my welcome...

but as someone who has studied immigration law, I can say to people who say that aliens should come here "legally" that unfortunately not all visas are created equal - our country allots a certain number of legal visas to each country dpending on how "desirable" those countries are - in some countires like China (which by the way has one of the highest number of illegal aliens in this country) the wait list can be upwards of 10 years. Likewise "people who come on rafts" are usually Cubans and as long as they reach US soil they are considered "Legal" - they do not have the option of trying to file paperwork to come here legally...

just my 2 cents..sorry I hope I ddin't offendChat Icon

ok so lets say, we kick them out and then what? who is going to do some of these jobs that they are doing, most people dont want them!!! I know some people that are here illegally and let me tell you, I wouldnt want to be in their shoes... most of them work so hard just to send back some money home, they dont see their families for years... it is a very difficult decision for these people to decide to come here knowing that they will be here all alone, noone will help you and noone to support you...

I just read on cnn.com that without these workers, prices on farmed goods would go up between 5-10%

Unfortunately don't think much will change from these protests and tomorrow America will be the way it was yesterday, last week, last year, etc.

thanks, thats interesting... I just cant help and feel really sorry for these people... most of them are looking for a better life, it is not their fault that they were born in poorer countries... I dont know, very tough issues...

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'

couldn't one make the argument that if you do legalize them

yes - certain prices will go up

and the cost of other things will go down?? Like the cost of educating the children. Legalize everyone and you have more of a population to spread the cost over. and quite frankly, children who speak a language other than English cost taxpayers a LOT more than those who speak english.

or maybe having more people paying into Social Security will fix it.

but, I still can't get past that those here illegally are "cutting the line" to become citizens when there are those still in their home countries waiting to do things "the right way".

really?
how?
you don't think it won't take any money to get them
out????

What about if the farm workers have to spend more $$$ to hire farm hands- you don't think the government, who is already in deep with farm subsidies won't hand out more money to the farms?

And why would health insurance go down- it isn't health insurance that pays for people who cannot afford hospital stays, it's the government.

And I really think hospitals cannot stay open b/c of mismanagement- not b/c of illegal immigrants.

Illegal immigrants are a hot issue now and unfortunately a scapegoat for everything from high health insurance premiums to taxes....

I wonder if it's their fault that gas prices are so high.

I know there are many people who "wait their turn" to come to the US - which is easier to do in say the UK, and if your are a professional in your own country chances are you probably are doing semi-OK relatively speaking. However, if you are from a country where your children are starving, and their are no jobs to be heard of and your options are coming to the US and doing menial labor staying in your country and becoming a drug mule etc. what would you choose? let your children go hungry?
Its dramatic, I know, but I think we are very lucky to be born here and cannot imagine the things that other people go through especially in 3d world country. It was just pure luck that we were born here...

what I am saying if you legalize them they would THEN be required to pay taxes? yes? therefore it would not take a toll on the current tax payers?

I do not have a problem with making them legal but for the sake of everybody something needs to be done! ASAP...

and I have a question for you do you draw a line? and say ok no more? or do we have an open door policy? come in and stay as you please...Just a thought...

Can someone tell me how undocumented immigrants get healthcare here? I'm really asking...someone posted that we are paying for their healthcare, I'm just wondering how that can happen?

because if they go to an ER in a county hosp they will be treated for free. so they go to the ER when their kids have a fever or for any reason!

no wonder when the rest of us go, our insurance co gets charged $500 for an aspirin. someone has to absorb the cost!

They apply through social services

They also just walk into the "free" clinics at the County Center or use the ER

Okay free clinics and ERs I understand. But how do you apply through Social Services with no SS# and documentation?

not all of them go straight to ER, some just go to regular doctors and pay in cash for treatments...
