I just wanted to share a sad story, Very good friends of ours have a young son whom was stuggling in school and during a parent teacher meeting the teacher discussed leaving him back...and the parents asked the teachers if their son could get extra help to get caught up...and this is what they were told, We would if we could but unfortunately the extra help aid were teach the other kids how to speak English...and I find that to be very Chat Icon

honestly, that happens a lot! when school budgets are voted down, the children who suffer the most are the main-stream, native English speakers. ESL program and bilingual programs, for example - are federally required - so those things can NEVER be cut!! discretionary things - like sports and club are the first to go.

Sorry to hijack, but I hope your friends force the issue with their child. If that school has that many kids who need extra help learning English they probably get a good amount of Title VII money (which is earmarked for English language learners) which is supposed to fund extra help. I'd be pizzed if I were your friends- they need to remind those teachers about NCLB.

A single person could certainly survive on $10 an hour.

Before or after taxes? I guess it's how you define "survive". When I started teaching ten years ago I lived paycheck to paycheck and really struggled. And this was making a decent salary with a supercheap apartment ($625 a month, a steal even in '97). It was still more than $10 an hour, and it was hard.

ok so lets say they get deported, will it make you feel better to know that most of these people are going back to poverty?

I think the real solution to this issue would be finding a way to get their economy back on its feet. Then everyone would be happy, they could live in their native country and be able to make a living, and some out of work Americans can start to get jobs.

After taxes. Though usually day laborers make more than that. I had a friend in HS who worked with a construction company, and the more skilled worked (who were all undocumented) would make $20-30. The other guys made about 12-15. Not bad, considering none of their salaries were taxed and they were paid in cash everyday.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'

sometimes i wonder if this issue is really about assimilation- if those immigrants (specifically Mexican/Latin American in origin) would "assimilate", speak English, etc, most probably wouldn't have a problem with them.

I say this b/c in reading this thread- there seems to be a lot of resentment that the immigrants of today do not do what our immigrant relatives did in the 1890s-1930s when immigration is at its highpoint.

In a country this large that is supposedly made up of a "melting pot" is is THAT important to have a homogenous culture. In addition- in a World made smaller by the internet and other technological innovations- is it THAT important that they speak English? The USA does TONS of business with foreigns countries- a lot of them who do NOT speak English, and we all get along.

The World is becoming smaller- to demand all immigrants to have the same culture, morals, etc. as us is crazy. Just like demanding it on the rest of the world.

I think a lot of this argument has to do with the bitterness that immigrants can have national pride in where they come from AND where they live. Just like we have ST. Paddy's Day, Columbus Day, Greek Independence Day, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, etc etc.

It's an age-old argument found throughout US history- the "old" immigrants don't like the "new" immigrants and try to keep them out. The USA enacted SEVERE and discriminatory immigration rules I think in 1924 that limited immigration in countries to the % that were already here... so for example, if the USA was made up of mostly British and German immigrants, more British and German immigrants were let in..

I say- this is just another issue that both parties are throwing out there so we don't focus on what's really going on in our Country- divide us so we don't pay attention.

I don't know if anyone has been keeping up with current events, but Puerto Rico just shut down their government because they are out of cash. Any chance this will have an impact even further on illegal immigration?

Since PR is a commonwealth (is that the right term? Now I think it might be territory) of the US, aren't they citizens? Do they have to go through the same process?

I really do not mean to pick on you, I just disagree completely wiht what you are saying.

$10/hr x 40 hrs= $400 a week (assuming that there are no taxes taken out)

$400 x 4 weeks= $1600

Assuming you can find a 1br for $1000 (which would be a steal), you have $600 left for food, electricity, clothing, metrocard. If you were frugal, you could make it work. But all it takes is ONE injury, one illness, to completely screw you over. Especially with the physical labor a lot of the illegal immigrats are doing. No sick days, no health insurance- you've lost your job and are evicted from the apartment.

My point is, being an illegal immigrant is FAR from the free ride that it is made out to be.

And about the police officers making $25k to risk their lives on a daily basis, I agree that it is a shame. Personally, I would not mind paying higher taxes that go to their paychecks. That being said- most of the officers have opportunities that the immigrants will never even be able to consider. Promotions, etc.

what are the crime rates in Suffolk vs. the city? what is the 911 call ratio?

maybe that was an exaggeration, but I believe the point was clear. NYPD should not make 1/4 of what LI cops make.

You dont need to find a one bedroom for $1000 a month. You need to have 10 people who all make 10 an hour living in a 3bedroom $2000 a month place... things become a lot cheaper that way.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'

here's what it comes down to for me, my great grandmother came over on a boat from Austria at 15 with her sister who was 17, the family only had enough money to send the two at that time. At Ellis Island, her older sister was turned away because she had pink eye, and my great grandmother never saw her again. They had to say goodbye right then and there, one went back to Europe, and the other became a legal immigrant. So, I don't care if the process to be here legally is hard, it SHOULD BE HARD, "it's the hard that makes it great". It's always been hard, it's always been something that you had to sacrifice and work for, and if someone is willing to travel over the border in the middle of the night, on a raft, in a container or one of the many dangerous and terrifying ways illegal aliens come over here now, then filling out the proper paperwork, even if it takes years, shouldn't be too hard.

The guys in Brentwood (where DH and I both lived) were so busy pulling DH over for going 5 miles over the limit two blocks from his house that they missed the drug deal in the park next to DH's parents' house.

I heard similar stories about my grandfather's family coming here from Italy.

Unfortunately the problem today seems to be more of the length of time it takes to get here. I am an adult ESL teacher (English as a Second Language) and my students have told me that they came here however they could because they have had family members wait 20 years to get some paperwork. I guess when you look at your life and realize what you can accomplish in 20 years, you find a way here.

Isn't that what the complaint is? That massive amounts of illegal immigrants are crowding into tiny places? Your solution is contributing to the problem.
