BUT the walker/high chair thing...well I think if your leaving them for even 1 minute unattended, you are an idiot and thats where this results from.
This high chair comment is where the first time moms are very obvious...
How do you think you get them more food when they finish what you put out to start? When you need to get paper towels because the jar of bananas got thrown against the wall? And when mom has to go to the bathroom? Or when your child is working very, very hard at picking up cheerios and has been for the last 20 minutes... Every one of you is going to leave your child in a high chair unattended for more than one minute at a time.
Buy a good current high chair with a stable base and well fitted straps, and your child is safe even when you do something horrid like answer the phone! *GASP*

I have to agree. I think the danger about high chairs is that parents/caregivers don't strap the child/baby in and think it's okay and they are safe because the tray is there and will protect them.
I don't see any danger in leaving Molly in her high chair, strapped in properly while I make dinner. She's happy, content and safe.
Don't let people scare you.

Re: Went to a baby safety class today - some of the things I learned:
I think walkers are bad when you have stairs in the house for a child to fall down, other than that I really dont see a huge problem with the,
Baby Bjorns put the pressure on the babies hips, I am 100000% all for slings!!
Exersaucers are fabulous when the baby is out of the bouncy seat and you need 10 -15 minutes to get into the shower and need to keep baby occupied. Both my kids were walking before 1 year. I think overuse could possibly hinder developement but the occasional dip in the ES isn't going to do harm.
Have never had my children fall out of a highchair. Although I would never leave them in there with just a tray to hold them in. Straps are wonderous things!!
We even had a doorway bouncer. Emma loved to jump in that thing. You dont do it when they can put flat feet on the floor but when their tippy toes can touch just enough to push off. Again, its all about the amount of time you put your children into it.

I am going to be a first time mom as well, but I think this is VERY unrealistic...you WILL have to take your eyes off your baby at some point.

I am afraid of those doorway jumpers- I don't trust the sturdiness of my house.
And I also changed my mind about the walker- DH and I went to a "Baby Boot Camp" class on Saturday, and while the focus was on newborn care, the nurse cautioned us on walkers. You have to be careful not just of stairs, but of any kind of threshold between rooms (which we have between our kitchen and living room) because the walker can get thrown off balance and possibly tip.

Walkers are bad and have been banned in California and will be banned in other states shortly.
Baby holders (Baby Bjorn, etc) put pressure on a baby's spine...the slings are a much better option.
Two of the most dangerous items - high chairs and cribs (we ordered something called a feeding table which is low to the ground instead of a high chair).
Jumpers that hook to door frames are very dangerous and put pressure on spine and lower back.
HTH! Take it for what it's worth
Jesus H. Christ, they like to scare the crap out of us, don't they?
If you look at what are "walkers" now, they don't have wheels. They are stationary and just for play and for the baby to stand in it.
Yeah, he mentioned the exersaucer's are bad too...they are bad for development apparently. Listen...I know to take this stuff with a grain of salt...just thought I would share what I learned.
I heard that it is bad for their legs...but we all grew up in one, and our legs are perfectly fine

Re: Went to a baby safety class today - some of the things I learned:
Yikes, I hate to be the one to post this, but I thought you should know...
My sister was sold on the whole entire "baby tenda" pitch .... same concepts, safety not attractiveness, etc.
Then she found an article on them, they apparently have a tremendous amount of BBB complaints and are very shady. Although, the furniture meets all standards, they have been fined by several organizations (Safety Related) for giving false statistics and utilizing "scare tactics" under the guise of a safety seminar.
My sister is now trying to sell most of what she purchased on E-Bay and regrets the purchase......... Also, the 2006 Baby Bargains book has a section about their dishonest scare tactics as well....
Maybe, you should check out the Better Business Bureau site.....

Re: Went to a baby safety class today - some of the things I learned:
unreal how safety factors change from year to year, I truly think companies prey on a new mom's anxiety, it's just like how each of my grandmothers cringed when i had my 3 month old standing on my lap while holding her, they screamed "you'll cause her to be bow-legged!!!" honestly, if 1 child gets injured when using a product (and usually it is because the parent looks away, or the product is not being used correctly), then they have t put a safety precaution on it. just like meds, if 1 person has a reaction to it, it becomes a universal precaution. Just relax Mommies, you will be wonderful regardless of what high chair you buy
