Re: Went to BJ's today in order to join, but didn't
I've also been a member of both and I absolutely LOVE BJs. I can't believe I didn't switch years ago! The one off of exit 58 is always empty, so we always go there. I buy my diapers, wipes, cold cuts, everything there. They have so many more choices for baby items and I like that not everyhing is super-sized. Like, I can buy a half gallon of milk there and a small container of fruit salad instead of enough to feed a small army. I also love that you can use coupons and any credit card. I will never go back to Costco!

That's the one I go to in Islandia and the lines are always HUGE when I go! I usually go weekends though.

That's so funny because JT and I always go on Saturday mornings and never have a problem! However, compared to Costco, which we were just recently members of, it might just seem less busy?

Honestly, this is really not the time of year to judge how crowded it is. Wait until after the holidays and go back to see if you like it any better.
I belong to Costco and I usually go right when they open - I am able to park and I seem to get out fairly quickly and by the time I leave, it seems to be getting much more crowded.

Re: Went to BJ's today in order to join, but didn't
That's weird because I was at the Islandia BJs yesterday morning (around 9am) and it was dead! I was surprised at how few people were there. I've gone there before at that time and it was always busy. I just figured most people were headed to the malls instead.
I think any of these kinds of places are pretty much always busy.

wow, so the consensus seems to be that BJ's is better. I think I'll go to Costco and have a look, I'm curious.
The one in Islandia is ALWAYS packed. We had a membership and only went twice in 1 year because the lines were always so insane. People are really pushy there too.
I live right around the block from there and there are usually lines during any "shopping" time(after work, Weekends, etc) DH and i were there a few months ago and there was a line of about 20 people having their receipts checked by an old man to get out of the store and he was taking FOREVER. My DH started YELLING, Come on buddy. I was so embarassed and then the people in front of us were cheering him on. I just walked out of there

Re: Went to BJ's today in order to join, but didn't
I've been to both. Although Costco in NY and BJ's here. By far, by very far, I LOVE BJ's. Always empty, much cheaper (to me) and they take coupons.
However, little known fact, Costco diamonds are of amazing quality. They do not carry anything less than I-VS2. Almost the same standards as Tiffany and the prices are amazing for the quality. FYI!

good to know about costco diamonds!
the parking lot is awful at costco, but while the lines look long they always move very quick, I can't complain.

Good morning Amercia did a segment on this a while ago - the bought a diamond from Costco or BJS (i forgot which one) - and then the same diamond from tiffanys. the Costco diamond appraised for more than what they paid for it, and they said it was of the quality they said it was. They said with Tiffanys, you are buying the name

I edited my post, the quality is actually even better than I posted:
Costco guarantees diamond clarity to be VS-2 (Very Slightly Included) and color to be I (Near Colorless) or better. To ensure our quality is never compromised and our orders are prompt, our vendors often supply us with higher quality diamonds. Our gemologists check every diamond to ensure our minimum quality is met.

Re: Went to BJ's today in order to join, but didn't
WE use Costco and try and get in there early (DH has a business membership). Yeah, the lines can be long, but we tend to go off hours. More often than not we use hte Melville one, but if we are in the area, we use the Westbury one.

There have been quite a few articles on this as well. One used BlueNile.com as an example (great prices too).
Yes, with a Tiffany diamond you're buying a name and the "peace of mind" that comes from buying there (and service).
Most people can not tell the difference though.
1ct solitaires at Costco are around $5K. It's at least double that at a retailer like Tiffany.
But their overall jewelry is great too...much, much, much better quality than a place like Fortunoff.
And, much like Tiffany, they do not sell conflict diamonds. Not all retailers can say that.
Costco Wholesale shares the concern of the global community in abolishing conflict diamonds, and is committed to procuring goods of the utmost integrity. We are proud to sell beautiful, high quality diamonds that are obtained solely through closely monitored legal channels set forth by the United Nations’ Kimberley Process.
The Kimberley Process, adopted into U.S. and Canadian legislation, requires manufacturers to comply with a lengthy procedure which closely tracks, ships and receives each diamond, documenting each step so as to monitor the stones’ origin. Diamonds that we offer for sale are procured from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict and comply with the United Nations resolutions set forth by the Kimberly Process procedure.

That's semantics, really. The difference is that the GIA is the oldest and first. But certified is certified...

I spotted a diamond on their site with the same EXACT specs as my e-ring. it's $2000 more than DH paid for it. and mine is GIA. good to know he got such a great deal!

When my DH was looking for Rings his sister took him to Costco he laughed but they do have great diamonds there and QUARANTEE that it will appraise for more. He wound up getting it somewhere else but he did look there.

You know how much he paid for your ring?
It's always great to get an awesome deal!!
It's still retail pricing, but it's not as expensive as other retailers. Wholesale pricing (like the Diamond District) will always be better - I love the DD! But the thing with that is, if you care (most people don't care or know enough), there's no way of knowing if it's a conflict diamond or not.

my aunt is a jeweler and she doesnt like how the IGI certifies - I'll ask her more in detail, but she told FH to only look at GIA certified diamonds....
