What age did you pay for an airline seat?

Dd will be 17 months for our next vacation and I'm thinking of just buying her a seat. Won't be as easy holding her for the flight, even if it is only 3 hours.

Plus I would want to bring our own car seat to use while on vacation and don't really want to check it so they can toss it around.

Thoughts?

DD flew for the first time at 9 months and we got her her own seat. It makes things easier and safer.

What age did you pay for an airline seat?

Dd flew for the first time at 4 1/2 months and I held her, mostly in the baby carrier. She would have wanted to be held at that point anyway and she slept on me most of it.

Maybe I will splurge. Lol

At that age, I would definitely pay for a seat. We flew to FL with DS when he was 11 months old. I did not pay for a seat because silly me booked the flight when he was 6 months old and I assumed he wouldn't really be walking until he was closer to 14 months. I was wrong, he started walking at 10 months and was full on running thru the airport on our way to the plane lol. Thank goodness he slept! But I learned my lesson, never again. I would only do a lap child with an infant.

DS flew for the first time at 15 months and we got him a seat going one way.

We were kicking ourselves on the return flight Chat Icon Chat Icon

If you can afford it - buy the plane ticket for her.

First timew e flew with DS he was 15 months and he had a seat. He moves around too much to be held plus its the safest option to have his own seat. The stories of turbulence and babies flying out of parents hands scares me!

I personally would not pay for it before you have to. Especially on a short flight. I have flown with a lap infant at least 10 times (oldest was 18 months) and we haven't had any problems. Just bring snacks and an ipad. I would sooner upgrade to first class than buy an extra seat - we have used our miles to do that a few times.

We did not purchase a seat until they were over 2. Why waste the money.

This. My boys didn't get their own seat till around 2. We had 4 seats last vacation in February (DS1 is 4.5 and DS2 is 2.5) and my 2 year old pretty much went back and forth between our laps. Only time he sat in his seat was for take off and landing. Had enough stuff to entertain him.

We just factored it in to budgeting the vacation.

2. he flew at 20m and we would have bought the extra seat but we were flying with my mom too and figured we had plenty of room between the 3 adults in the seats.

I flew with DS at 17 months at Spirit and it was miserably cramped so that was the last time DS flew as a lap child. The next time we flew, he was almost 21 months and it was just he and I again and I was pregnant so it was worth every penny. I may have waited if I was flying with someone else and had extra room (and if the tickets were more expensive...)

We never did until we had no choice. On our last flight, DS2 turned 2 on the trip, so we didnt buy him a seat going there but had to buy him a return ticket

What age did you pay for an airline seat?

We flew to Europe when DS was 8, 12 and 18 months old. We didn't get him a seat ( it would be way over $1K), but DS got the bassinet. I don't think the airlines here offer the bassinet. At 30 months old we got hiim his own seat and he loved it.
I would say if you can and it's not too much money go for it. It can get a little overwhelming with a DC on your lap.

Re: What age did you pay for an airline seat?

I still have not paid... We just flew to orlando last week. Dd turns. 2 next week so it was our last chance to get in a free flight (we flew with her when she turned. 1 as well)... We brought the car seat to the gate on the way there, but flight was booked so we gate checked it... We checked it right away for our flight coming home and dd wound up getting a seat all to herself!! She did well both ways so I'm all for the lap child freebie Chat Icon

2...but the last time we flew before they were 21 months and I was 20? Weeks pregnant., it was fine
Just flew with ds who is 14 months and we didn't get him a seat. He needed to be constantly entertained but having his own seat wouldn't have changed that

I did with my DS when he was 14 or 15 mos. I was flying to NM by myself with my 4 yo DD. He will not sit still for me. The last flight we had taken was a 3 hr one to Fl. Luckily my DD fell asleep but he climbed all over me the entire time. I rented a CARES safety harness from E-bay so it would feel as though he was in the car seat without the bulk. Best decision ever :)
