DD was 19 mos when we flew with her and we got her a seat DS was 18 mos when we flew with him and we got him a seat.
It made our lives much easier having them in their carseat at that age. I'm glad we did it.

Re: What age did you pay for an airline seat?
On my third child and we always pay for a seat now. Before we always would wait until they turned two and bring the carseat aboard in hopes of getting an empty seat to put them in. That worked some of the time. I've learned it's so much easier keeping them calm and better chances of them napping when they have their own carseat on the plane.
Now, it's too much work tending two older children and holding a baby that we just get her a seat. She's safer, the carseat won't get knocked around in baggage, and she naps much better in her own seat.

We have only flown with DS to myrtle beach which is an hour and a half flight. If it was longer then I would probably pay for a seat- We flew with him as a lap child when he was 10 months and it was manageable but we are flying there again with him as a lap child at 22 months and I am just hoping the 1.5 hours goes fast since he is extra squirmy!

Re: What age did you pay for an airline seat?
We paid for a seat when we had to. His 2nd birthday fell while we were on vacation in NC so we did not pay for a ticket on the was there but had to for the way back. He mostly slept on my dad's lap on the way there and on the way back, they were overbooked (SURPRISE) and asking people to give up their seat. We told them we thought he would probably end up sitting on our laps anyway so we offered our seat and they told us they couldn't do it. Seemed silly...but regulations.
He has always been pretty good on any flights and usually falls asleep. We have only flown to NC too though, so it was fairly short trips.
