What are the pros to making pot legal?
I don't mean to sound like an idiot but how does legalizing it help?

What are the pros to making pot legal?
i'll admit that i'm a very anti-pot person. i can only speak for my life experience... it has not been a good thing to be around people who smoke it.
that being said... i have not been able to find one real negative thing about making it legal.

People smoke it anyway and if it was legalized the same rules would apply as with drinking, like no smoking and driving. I am all for it.

I agree with this - yes, some people who smoke pot do crappy things when they are high. But some people who drink do crappy things when they are drunk, and alcohol is legal.
The moral of the story is... people can do crappy things, whether or not the substance they are using is legal (or even when they aren't using any substance other than their own sucky personality ).

What are the pros to making pot legal?
I have never met any stoner who was a d ick because of weed. And I can safely say I know a LOT of people who smoke. I've seen people turn Into über douches when drinking, and certainly imbibing in harder drugs.
The worst thing I've ever seen happen from a stoned person is just complete laziness and over eating.

What are the cons? And I mean that in the sense of - if you aren't sure what the pros are, ask yourself what the cons are or put them here so people can counter-argue or make a case against them.

These are the main two reasons, aside from the fact that people who smoke would like to have it more easily accessible & not have to hide the fact that they smoke.
There is also the medical marijuana issue.
Personally, I have no problem with it being legal if the actual use of it remains the same, but I would hate to see it become as commonplace as cigarette smoking used to be, because I was around it a lot in college & am not a fan. The smell alone. . .
I have occasionally worked with people who smoked a lot & they were so useless during the work day.

What are the pros to making pot legal?
Pro: making it legal will reduce the need to find alternatives Pro: they can streamline the source to safely distribute (instead of backyard folks cutting it with meth or cocaine to cause it to be a 'gateway' drug that folks already tagged it and so the dealers MADE it one) Pro: Tax it Pro: Health advantages Pro: hemp product upsurge Pro: Economic boost.
As far as those who are affected by it. I swear its because of it being 'cut' because TONS of very brilliant and successful hippie generation are not CEOs and big wigs in all sorts of places and they've been heavy pot smokers. I know more than a few who own up to it. They are sharp as whips. They too say that its the 'shit' that the current pot is cut with that makes it so 'bad'. They prefer to grow their own or get it straight from a trusted source.

Re: What are the pros to making pot legal?
Second-hand contact highs? Do you want your kids smoking pot? Lung cancer? Reduced brain cells. Lethargy. Driving with people high on the road. Addiction. Increased need for rehab. Did I mention health problems?

What are the cons? And I mean that in the sense of - if you aren't sure what the pros are, ask yourself what the cons are or put them here so people can counter-argue or make a case against them.
There are practically NO cons at all to making pot legal.
1. You cant die from pot. 2. You cant overdose on pot. 3. You cant get addicted to pot. ~~~With the caveat that some people need it to cope. Its not a physical addiction. 4. Its safer than alcohol. 5. Contrary to popular belief it is NOT a gateway drug.
Will people drive when they are high? yes. The good news is it actually does not really impair your driving. I cant tell you how many people I know who drive after smoking and say "it actually makes me more careful". To be CLEAR I don't condone it.
The biggest pro is that it can put the drug cartels out of business in Mexico.
....and bring in revenue, and help people with illness, and clear out the jails for people who are smoking pot. Jail overcrowding for pot is ridiculous by the way.

I'm not against legalizing it at all. I just still have questions that I haven't seen answers to.
For instance, are the tax benefits helping states that legalized it? Aren't there still going to be dealers who lace it with crap? Can you grow your own? Will it be legal to smoke in the presence of minors? Will smoking and driving be permissible? Will there be limits? Will people be allowed to smoke on the job?
Things like that...I guess I just see other problems arising from making it legal. Again, I'm NOT against making it legal, I just wonder what ramifications will arise.

- I think tax benefits will get more states to join in. Colorado is setting the bar - Dealers may still cut it but why go to a dealer if you can by from the State legally and pure with options (again look at Colorado) - however you can still by moonshine and other non-taxed tobacco now. - Its still legal to smoke cigarettes in front of minors which causes harmful lung decay? - Again look to Colorado which does limit per purchase amounts. - I can't smoke in my job now. Theoretically, I can't drink either (tho we do). Still our building has a no smoking rule and that applies to cigarettes and candles or incense. So I see no change if pot is legalized. - Grow your own? Haha already happens. Just don't have to do it inside anymore.
ETA - on the job question I think every job has its own rules. I know a lot of contractors that let you smoke on the job but won't let you THINK about a beer. I doubt they'll let you smoke pot as it could say it was impairing your ability to say use a forklift.
Ironically, I drove through San Fran and folks were toking up on the sidewalk and blowing it into the faces of the folks passing by, tourists and locals alike. Locals seemed annoyed but moved on, the tourist seemed either amused or shocked. (some both).
