Why Pot should be legal
Or at LEAST decriminalized. We are loosing the war on drugs, AND we are spending money we dont need to to prsecute these people. Its just silly. Make it leagl already. Its safer than alchohol.
Philly saves $2 million bucks!

Why pot shouldn't be legal:
Because I just got home from being in a car accident two hours ago where the person who caused a four car pileup AND fled the scene (but was caught thanks to my awesome DH) was high on pot and Percocets. One of the cars had two babies in it Thank God everyone was OK.

then again, I'd bet most of us have major painkillers in the house leftover from dental work, surgeries, prescribed for menstrual pains, etc. etc. that make us feel loopy.
Legally.
Should you drive after using them? No.
Drinking alcohol is legal. Drinking and then driving is not.
Same thing would be applicable to pot.

Re: Why Pot should be legal
Can you imagine if they taxed pot? There would be no deficit. Its crazy how many successful, professional, adult people I know that smoke pot. If you taxed it- there would be no financial crisis in washington.
And I don't buy it as a gateway drug, anymore than alcohol is. In college, so many people I know smoked pot who never did anything more.
ETA: To the above poster, I'm sorry about the accident. It just goes to show you that the illegality of pot doesn't keep people from smoking it. But the same rules that apply to alcohol should apply to pot. Not to mention, no one should be driving when on Percoset- at least that's what the told me when they prescribed it for me after my c-section.

For the record, I mean no drama by this. Just making an observation.
I hope pot becomes decriminalized. Its just dumb to keep it illegal at this point, ESPECIALLY since its less dangerous than liquor.

Re: Why Pot should be legal
I feel the same way about prostitution. Why spend money busting people? It's a moral issue to me, not a legal one.
And same rules apply about drinking and driving, smoking pot and driving, and screwing a prostitute while driving. BAD!

Re: Why Pot should be legal
In my entire life, I've never smoked pot. I still think it should be legalized same as alcohol. It could be heavily taxed (like cigarettes).
I also agree prostitution should be legal. It would open up people to mandatory health and drug screenings. Like the PP said, it's a moral and not a legal issue.

Re: Why Pot should be legal
I agree. You can go to the doctor and he/she will prescribe a whole regiment of pain killers, and then people drive while on them but have some pot on you and you can go to jail for it.
Sorry but pills and pot are so different and cant be compared.
Legalize Pot and prostitution and we wont have any deficit.

No, actually we were on Horseblock in Medford. DH and I had driven to Hicksville to buy a BBQ from Lowes and stopped at the Medford Target on our way back. I said jokingly to DH, "If you'd let me stop at the Target in Commack we wouldn't have gotten into the accident." He said, "If we weren't there, the car behind us with the babies would have had more damage and the babies could have been hurt."
B, I know there's things that are legal and aren't legal, but I also think its a slippery slope in terms of other drugs and with so many people are already fcked up on crazy drugs nowadays, I don't see the reason to start legalizing them. The guy who caused our accident was so high he couldn't get out of the car after my DH caught him and tried to run him over! The cops asked him we why he fled and he said he had no idea he was even in an accident or had fled. Yeah, he was arrested.

Must have been a Target thing, this was outside Target too! Well, glad everyone was okay.
To the OP, I don't believe it should be made legal. As a high school teacher, I can only imagine the effect on the youth. These kids use inhalants (legal) and drink mouthwash just to get high.

I agree with legalizing it. If you look at statistics of where it is legal they have less incidents of overuse. When something is illegal people want it more and make poor decisions when using it. From a medical standpoint too it does help cancer patients and glaucoma patients.
Tax wise it would help with the deficit as would legalizing prostitution.
As the pp said I know MANY professionals who use it actually both if I want to be honest.

This is one of the things holding me back from saying it should be legal.
Teenagers do enough damage to themselves with legal substances. I realize they could get pot now if they ask the right people, but why make it more accessible? What would be the plan to keep it away from them? What would be the age limit?
Also, what would be the incentive to buy from the legal market where the buyer has to pay taxes? The black market right now is so strong it's not going to just die out just because people can open storefronts.
I am sincerely curious about the answers to these questions as I'm open to being swayed on this.

Im sure it would probably be 18 or 21 like alcohol and cigarettes. Im leaning more towards 21 so that those 18 year olds still in high school wouldn't have as easy access to it.

In my high school, alcohol was WAY harder to get access to than pot. While we needed to find fake IDs or adults to buy alcohol, half of my grade was selling pot at all times. I sincerely don't think that legalizing it, regulating it, and adding a legal age would increase the use in children and young adults. If anything, it would reduce it.
As for the incentive to buy on the legal market, once something becomes legal, the illegal market all but disappears. I'm sure that people could be making bathtub gin that's a lot stronger than what you buy in the stores...but how many people are still making bathtub gin?

------------------------------------- sorry, I messed up quoting, but I agree with this also & it's one of the reasons I'm against legalizing it. Some people are already going around high on everything that they can get their hands on so I just don't agree with making it easier. But I don't know how hard it really is to get any drug you wanted anyway. When I was younger, I had access to drugs pretty quickly whenever I wanted them & I think that knowing that they were illegal made me scared not to do them often & eventually not at all. I'm not talking about pot, I skipped pot.

Re: Why Pot should be legal
Do you know that in Amsterdam they have centers where Heroin addicts can "shoot up" safely & it has been proven to reduce crime?
Its fascinating if you read some of the statistics of countries where certain drugs ARE legal & regulated.
I'm studying to be an addictions specialist and have had professors who are also drug counselors who agree wholeheartedly with the legalization.
