What are your thoughts on 3rd tri & driving?

I'm nearing 39 weeks and I have a 20-30 min drive every AM and PM. (Local streets- no hwy)

Everyone's telling me that I shouldn't be driving in anymore and to start calling a car service.

What do you guys think? Chat Icon

I disagree with those people. Unless you can get someone to pay for said car service. Or if you can get Morgan Freeman to do it.
What is their reasoning exactly? So, say you started labor. And you really couldn't drive home, it was that far along. Would you be stranded?
MAROONED?

I think it's insane. It never crossed my mind not to drive and have never known anyone who has stopped either. I drive 30-40 minutes to work everyday and will be working up until I go into labor.

Chat Icon I know!

Well, I'm only working for another week (obviously), so the money spent will be fine.

Their reasoning is as follows:

Mom says: What if you go into labor and lose control of the car?

DH says: What if some jerrkoff cuts you off and the adrenaline/stress gets to the baby? (Personally, I think HE stresses me more on a regular basis than anyone on the road!!!)

Co-workers say: They would have NEVER drivien at my phase, and offer to find me a carpool. (Making me feel like a naiive future mom!)

Yes- I totally suggest riding with strangers.

Your mom is funny. Side roads=you can pull over. Unless I have not been preparing myself enough, and labor hits you like a gunshot to the head. Chat Icon
I have the worst road rage ever, so I can somewhat sympathize with the husband, but wouldn't that have been a problem all along?

Yes- on that note- I constantly have to remind ppl (like those who gasp when I say I'm working up to my due date) that the baby's not going to FALL out of me in a moment's notice!

if you go into labor its not like BOOM BAM BASH you are having major contractions and you can no longer control your functions. Its slow, it can take days from starting labor to actually having your baby. They are just trying to scare you, keep driving as long as you feel comfortable doing it.

People watch too much of these overly dramaticized movies! going into labor (at least not for me) was never like you see in the soap opera where the woman stears off the road and into the woods lol or off a cliff.

Unless they finish the work on the transporter on my Starship, I am going to be forced to drive.

Yea- and then "dies"... comes back 23 years later with no recollection of being pregnant... regains memory, only to realize that her daughter is now married to the man she's having an affair with...
haha- i love my soaps!

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts, ladies. I was starting to feel a little guilty. Chat Icon

LOL!!

Just put it this way. When I went into labor with DS (DC#1), I almost ended up driving myself to the hospital because my DH was such a mess I thought he was going to kill us all! lol

Re: What are your thoughts on 3rd tri & driving?

I had my c-section at 40 weeks 5 days and drove to the hospital that morning. People kept telling me not to drive, but I didn't understand it. I also had a 30-45 min commute to and from work each day. I knew that if I went into labor in the car and couldn't keep driving that I could pull over and call someone to come get me, but I didn't think that it was probable it was going to happen.

With DS I drove until I was in labor, literaly. I was having contractions every 30 minutes or so and drove from Farmingdale to Bayside for my nieces birthday and DS was born the next morning. I also drove until the very end with DD. If you are comfortable driving then I would continue but if you aren't then that is another story.

I drove while in early labor. As long as you can still fit behind the wheel and drive safely, its fine.

Re: What are your thoughts on 3rd tri & driving?

Driving for work related purposes is not something I'd give up.

I certainly wouldn't drive to NJ by myself that far along, but I don't see anything wrong with local driving.
