Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
my last pregancy we didnt have to pay anything to the hospital... i delivered at St Charles and inquired about the private room- it was pretty pricey... so we decided against it... they also told me that the floor was pretty empty... i had a planned c-section... i ended up not having a roomate for the first 3 nights... the last night i had a roommate and it was horrible... i was nursing, she wasnt, so she would take a sleeping pill and snored the night away- it was so loud and awful- like a chainsaw... she was fine during the day, it was kind of nice having the company when no one else was around, but at night i got no rest. I could have stayed an extra night, but opted to go home because i couldnt handle sleeping with cottonballs in my ears one more time- if i would have know i would have packed some ear plugs!
As far as DH spending the night and visitors, i liked the strict visiting hours that st charles had, and I am also happy that DH could not spend the night. He never would have had a good rest there- and it was better that he was well rested.

Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
It cost me nothing! I have the Empire Plan I shared a room and while it wasn't the best, I was in and out of the hospital. I'm thinking next time I might go to Stony Brook since they have private rooms. So I guess if you have the money and don't mind the cost, get the private room. If not, you will be fine sharing.
I would never make DH stay overnight with me. I hardly got any sleep and I'm sure he would get even less. He left late at night and came early in the morning. I think visiting hours where 10-10 for fathers.

Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
i pay nothing due to my insurance.
all hospital rooms at south nassau are private so i don't pay a penny for it to me a private room is extremely important.
i personally would never have or want DH to stay with me. you're so exhausted and just want a good night's sleep. DH was so happy to go home and sleep in our bed each night. he came at around 9am which gave me plenty of time to eat/shower/get ready before he came. i think i would have killed him if he was in the room with me 24 hours a day!

I forget about OOP but i think i remember the anestesiologist being a ton of cash - i don't remember why. I got a private room - I had a c-section and the rooms at Columbia were small. I am so glad i got a private room - they were $400 for how ever long you stayed. It was well worth the money.

Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
I'm not sure about my deductible, I think its under $500 if I remember correctly.
As for the private room, I'm a very picky sleeper. Lights, snoring, t.v., chatter all will keep me away. Its only $100 a night at my hospital (NY Methodist in Bklyn) so DH agreed its worth it. The trick is there are only 12 private rooms and well, you can't ask for them in advance. DH has instructions that has SOON as the cord is cut he has to talk to the nurses station to get a private room.

My insurance is different this time so Im not sure exactly what the OOP cost will be. Last time it didnt cost anything OOP but the anesthesiologist wasnt in my network so I got hit with a pretty big bill a couple months later.
I didnt have a private room last time but plan on getting one this time. St Charles only has a couple so Im hoping its available.

Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
I have empire BCBS and i had no co-pays or deductibles when i had my DD in June. I did have to pay a $200 co-pay for my DD's hospital stay though. And i delivered at stony brook so all the rooms are private.

mine is going to run me 2500.
all rooms are private.
dh stayed last time, I would have preferred he went home though. He was grouchy, tired, dirty, hungry...it would have made more sense for him to say good night and arrive back in the AM fresh.

Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
Depends on your insurance.
My plan has a $150 deductible and $1000 out of pocket maximum, so total will be $1150 for all covered charges for the year. I have already spent $375 of that on pre-natal care, so I have $775 left.
Remember though that some of the baby's charges can fall under their own deductible.
So I am anticipating more, but hoping for the best.
Right now I am planning on a semi-private room (delivering at Columbia Presbyterian) but may upgrade to private if it is not too expensive. I don't care about having someone else in the room and only anticipate my family visiting.
But I do want my baby with me at all times, if possible, so if I need to pony up for a private room for that, I will.

Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
Because of the nature of my delivery, I was given a private room as a courtesy. Best.thing.ever.
It was nice having a room to myself, but it was still hard having a baby in the NICU and I couldn't have her brought into the room when I wanted to see her.
I don't think I would pay for one this time around. If I wind up in the same set of circumstances, I would hope to get the same courtesy, but it's not a requirement.

Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
I didnt have any co-pay with the hospital, the insurance covered it all.
I did get a private room and very thankful that I did. If the hospital allows the babies to room with you overnight I would get a private room. I felt more comfortable breast feeding, if you or your roomate has a fussy baby it might keep the other person up and when your visitors come to see you its more "cozy". I also had some minor issues so it helped alot. Best of Luck with whatever you decide

I personally didnt get a private room the first time and prob wont get it this time.
It didnt bother me to share a room, i had good roommates!

Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
I paid nothing OOP, but at that time it was under my ins. I'm not sure this time because it's DH's ins., but I think it's nothing.
I also paid/ will pay for a private room. It is totally worth it!

One never knows how a delivery will go. I did not anticipate that I'd have a child in the NICU. I NEVER would have been able to deal with that if there was a person in a bed next to me nursing her child or getting visitors. I had my privacy. My DH could stay with me as long as I needed him to.
Bottom line, if you got the bucks, do it. If not, its no big deal. Women do it all the time.
ITA. The hospital where I delivered has all private rooms and I'm really grateful for that. I ended up with a c-section so I was there for 4 nights. DS ended up in the NICU at 2 days old. I couldn't have handled having a roommate and seeing a baby there. I remember getting emotional just hearing other babies in rooms nearby.
I'm really glad DH and I had our privacy. DH stayed overnight with me for my induction, but went home the next 2 nights b/c he was uncomfortable. Once DS was admitted to the NICU, DH stayed overnight. I was going down to the NICU at least every 3 hours b/c I wanted to continue BFing. I'd pump when I got back from feeding and visiting DS. It was nice to not have to worry about bothering anyone with the noise of the pump or the phone calls from the NICU waking me up to come down.

Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
DEF get a private room if you can. With DS I had a terrible terrible roomate and I was actually scared to sleep. And I had no control over the thermostat, I had to share the bathroom. Gross. You never know who you will be with!!!
DD we got a private room and what a DREAM!!!!!!!!!! It was quite, I totally bonded with her more then with DS in the hospital because I was all alone. Private bath, the room was much bigger and I could walk all around and have guests without worrying. It was perfect!!!! I will def go the same route when it is time for baby #3.
We had a copay for me and DD of $250 each. They just started the copay for the baby. With DS it was only for me and it was $250. That was it. They actually never even charged me for the private room. But even if they did, it would have been worth it.
Good Luck in whatever you choose

Re: What do we pay the hospital out of pocket after insurance when we deliver? Also Private room--would ya?
No copay with our insurance. It picks it all up. I'm delivering at NSUH and I am not paying $700 a night for a private room. I will see how my stay goes if it's that terrible I'll think about it, but I do not see it happening.
