I always ask what I should bring.
If they say nothing I bring flowers or wine or some other alocohol.
(I don't bring food unless I'm asked to.)

Beer Wine Dessert Flowers
If I bring dessert, I generally bring something that does not need refrigeration. I know in my house, it's a problem because I only have 1 fridge and when I have a party, it's usually full.

If you don't have time to make something, pick up something from a bakery, or even just potato salad/macaroni salad. Or beer. Or wine. Or ice. Or all of the above.
ETA: Or maybe cheese and crackers or fruit salad?

The last BBQ we went to we brought kielbasa for teh grill (which was greatly appreciated at 10pm that night ) and skinnygirl margarita. I admit, being on a low carb diet, I had an agenda

I would bring a Fruit Salad, maybe something from the bakery. A tomato and Mozzarella does wonders at a bbq.

I agree and having just hosted a BBQ this past weekend I was so glad people listened to this. I'm not shy about giving ideas for things, but if I say no I really mean no. I say flowers, wine, or beer.
