Re: What do you feel is a reasonable speed for the LIE?
Considering how fast people go with a 55 mph speed limit, I think it's fine the way it is. If it's raised to 65, would the norm be 75-80? I think that's way too fast for the volume of traffic in this area.

Re: What do you feel is a reasonable speed for the LIE?
I usually lock my cruise control on 69 in the left lane or the HOV which is usually where I am. It urkes me when a bus gets in the HOV going 50mph

I may get flamed for this but the left lane is for PASSING. If I am in the left lane and am not passing anyone , no matter what speed I am going I move over.

Re: What do you feel is a reasonable speed for the LIE?
I agree with above pp that the left lane is for passing, no matter what road you are on. That said, I don't usually drive in it, BUT when I do, if I am going 70 I feel like I am going too slow. I typically will not go over 70 and I stay to the middle or right.

Don't worry i am a go with the flow gal. If everyone is going 80 why not. but I if I am not near anyone I usually do 70 - 75 but down here in FL I am going 80 - 85 since our speed limit is 70.

that's true, except in downstate NY. that law has not been enforced down here for decades by the police... on purpose! I recall hearing years ago that this was because traffic is too heavy and because of the dense population, it is nearly impossible to widen and build new highways.
I always have to remind myself, once I'm off the GW bridge that I can't stay in the left lane for miles, or else I'll get a tickdet

I know it isn't enforced which sort of annoys me. I hate when someone in the left lane won't move over so you can pass them, especially if they have a line of cars behind them. They seem to think it is their job to regulate the speed limit.

Re: What do you feel is a reasonable speed for the LIE?
wow some of these answers are a bit surprising
i rarely go above 70... ESP on the LIE... people are f-ing crazy drivers and it scares me
but on the other hand, i dont drive in the left lane going slow b/c i know how left lane ppl are about slowER drivers
the only time i will ever go above 70 is out east on sunrise hwy... and even then, i stay above 70 for MAYBE 10 minutes in my drive and then i realize how fast i'm going and slow down

ITA!!!! I actually appreciate that it isn't enforced for strictly passing, but I seriously wish people would be polite and stay to the right if they want to drive slower. sometimes I think certain drivers are driving slow in the left lane as an act of passive aggression

70-75 for the left lane.
yeah at least... 75++ is how it seems people drive in the left lane. I pretty much never use the left lane b/c I don't like to drive that fast. 55-60 on the highway for me so I stick to the right or middle lane (I always feel like I'm going so slow! lol)
