I usually figure:
Right lane - 55 Middle lane - 65 Left lane - 75
I agree with this.
I agree as well

Re: What do you feel is a reasonable speed for the LIE?
i go with the rest of traffic. if everyone else is doing 70 in the middle lane or 75 in the left lane, that's what i will do.

Re: What do you feel is a reasonable speed for the LIE?
I don't go over 60-65. I've had my share of speeding tickets and have learned my lesson.
Whenever I go back to LI and have to drive I am so scared. LI drivers are crazy and I think that is dangerous. I may get flamed for this, but I think by going 70-75 when the speed limit is 55 is a danger to the others on the road. The speed limit is there for a reason.

I may get flamed for this but the left lane is for PASSING. If I am in the left lane and am not passing anyone , no matter what speed I am going I move over.
that's true, except in downstate NY. that law has not been enforced down here for decades by the police... on purpose! I recall hearing years ago that this was because traffic is too heavy and because of the dense population, it is nearly impossible to widen and build new highways.
I always have to remind myself, once I'm off the GW bridge that I can't stay in the left lane for miles, or else I'll get a tickdet
I know it isn't enforced which sort of annoys me. I hate when someone in the left lane won't move over so you can pass them, especially if they have a line of cars behind them. They seem to think it is their job to regulate the speed limit.
ITA!!!! I actually appreciate that it isn't enforced for strictly passing, but I seriously wish people would be polite and stay to the right if they want to drive slower. sometimes I think certain drivers are driving slow in the left lane as an act of passive aggression
it is definitely passive agressiveness and they know exactly what they're doing.
as someone who commutes 50+ miles a day, i have learned to analyze drivers--i can even pick out certain types of drivers by the cars they drive! but that's a whole other post.... there are people who get kicks out of p issing other people off while driving--which can lead to serious road rage.
it is impossible to leave the left lane for passing on LI. there is just too much traffic--way too many cars! traffic would be more of a standstill than it already is.
that being said, the left lane goes approx 80 mph.

same here - i don't drive as much in NY as i did when i was living out of state, but i'm really surprised to see so many people saying they do 20+ over the limit ( i stick to around 65 or the general flow of traffic) Between speeding tickets, traffic, and general danger, I don't really get it.

I don't think it's practical for police to enforce the passing rules given how heavy the traffic is on LI. You need the left lane as a regular travel lane to ease the traffic.

70-75 for the left lane.
yeah at least... 75++ is how it seems people drive in the left lane. I pretty much never use the left lane b/c I don't like to drive that fast. 55-60 on the highway for me so I stick to the right or middle lane (I always feel like I'm going so slow! lol)
no---you are just obeying the law. If someone is up my arse i do not move-they can move..jmho

Me too! I rarely drive on the LIE, but when I went to a wedding this past summer, I was shocked by how fast people were going. It's reckless, IMO. We drove in the right lane going about 60. I would think with the amount of posts on NFR about car accidents (being a witness to, a part of, in the news etc...) that people would drive a little closer to the speed limit.

75+ in the left lane - If someone looks like they want to get around me and go even faster , I move over .........
I don't understand why anyone would WANT to drive in the left lane and go 60 mph ..........
