What do you think is the most important thing to splurge on with your wedding?
My future SIL asked me to help her plan her wedding (Nov wedding), I told her music and food was the focus, but what did everyone else feel was most imprtant to splurge on?

is food important, or is the cocktail hour what people remember? See, I remember a few weddings where the food was pretty gross and it stands out to me and I remember Tavern on the Green where everything was perfect

I agree. Although food and music are important - I think it is difficult to splurge on the hall bc it the bulk of the wedding expense. There are great places in all different price ranges. I found that music was basically the same price all around, after you decided whether you want a DJ of band (within a few hundred dollars)

i don't think its so much a matter of splurging as it is doing your research and finding Talented individuals. I saw photographers that were much cheaper than mine, and did a far superior job than mine did... so money doesn't always equal quality.

Re: What do you think is the most important thing to splurge on with your wedding?
drinks and food music photographer honeymoon
in that order
things not to spend a ton on- IMO
wedding dress- just make sure you look and feel good in it
flowers- most people don't care- and would rather not have something in the center on the table - blocking seeing the people on the other side
invites- most people throw them away
favors- make a donation to a favorite charity instead

very good point. I have to say that I really did my homework and was very satisfied with everything in the end. Alot of people criticized me and said that I put too much time/energy into wedding planning, and I do not regret one second of it, esp. when you are putting out so much money for the day.
As for splurging on the photographer, I think that I splurged on the package that I got, and on my album a little too. I may think it was a waste 10 years down the road, but right now I am happy with my splurge.

I totally agree. I hate most of my pics and I spent more money than I wanted (even though I did the research and saw other bride's photos). I think I could have gone with a more affordable photog and gotten better pics.
ETA: I fogot to answrer the OP question. I think music and venue are essential. They set the tone for the wedding. Food is really important too because people always remember when the food was really good or really bad...unfortunately for many people it overshadows why the day is acutally important.

Re: What do you think is the most important thing to splurge on with your wedding?
I understand that food is the most important to so many mainly because it sucks up the biggest part of the wedding budget but IMO food gets digested and forgotten.
Pictures (and video to some) capture lifelong memories. Nobody is going to think about the food 10 years from now. I would also lump in entertainment because if people are having a lousy time, then nobody smiles or dances thus making pictures look lousy.

Where does she want to book (what area?)? My place included centerpieces and cake, which I didn't even think about at the time, but wound up saving quite a bit of money.
We splurged on the band and the chocolate fountain and I am so glad we did! I think everyone loved the fountain...

How very exciting this is that they are finally "planning" it. They were over today and we were looking at dresses online - she has some really great ideas!!
