Was the waiter supposed to say "what are you looking to spend?"
$45 could have easily been their house bottle or well near the bottom of the list.
$45 is not extravagant for anywhere! Olive Garden has $45 bottles of wine! Friday's has $45 bottles of wine!
You will never find wine for liquor store prices at restaurants. Wine is how these places make their $$$$$.
pssssssssst read the comments.
i read the first three pages. i can't get into it any further it hurts my brain. i guess i can't get past the $45 bottle.
just to sum up, this place is a PUB. if Friday's cheapest bottle of wine is $45, then I will eat my shorts.
this place advertises a $17/bottle night on their website.
the girls SHOULD HAVE been slightly more involved in the choice, but I have to say I would not have expected that price either at this type of place. by halves.
not their cheapest but they have $45 bottles. olive garden (looked at their menu online) ranges from 23-117!!!!
paddy's loft (pub) has bottles over $125!
it is COMMON practice to mark bottles up 3-4x retail. What bottle of merlot was it? I'd like to look up the retail.
I also saw the comment about the no-show fee ... that is insanity.

Re: What do you think of this situation?
Hemingway's is a pub trying to be a nice place? Entrees can cost upwarsd for $25-$40 so this is NOT a pub trying to be a nice(r) place.
$45 is certainly average IF that.
I go to this place on average once a month, middle of the road restaurant on LI, not a pub.

Now that I know what place it is, I'd be floored if I had to pay $45 for a bottle of wine. I'd say yes the waiter took advantage of you.

seriously? wow, my perception of restaurants on LI must be seriously skewed. I've traveled this country for 6 years and eaten in most of it's cities and I would not consider Hemingway's a pub or (for lack of better words) hole in the wall.
A bottle of wine that costs $45 would cost $15-$18 in a retail situation. How is that a rip of for this caliber restuarant?

I think a lot of the people on here and on Yelp are questioning the type of "caliber" this restaurant is.
and I don't think pubs are holes in the walls. I think they serve good food for a nice price. no shame in that.
but looking at the menu on yelp, I would say that the entrees are overpriced.
and if they have bottles of wine in their cellar that they can sell for $17 on a thursday night, they had a $25 merlot for these girls on a Saturday.

Unless they have revamped their menu since the last time I was there, I would definitely not call this a middle of the road restaurant. Their prices make it try to seem that way, but the truth is they are a glorified pub. Their menu is basically the same as BK Sweeneys and Singletons.

This is exactly what I was referring to but yes, I consider Hemingway's an overpriced pub. Nothing wrong with an overpriced pub, I just would not expect a $45 bottle of wine when they sell more reasonable (and signficantly less expensive options). If you're asking who I fault, it's the girls who ordered the bottle who allowed the waiter to pad his bill.
