Re: What do you think of this situation?
It is definitely the girls' fault.
I don't think $45 is very expensive either. The waiter picked a lower mid priced one. That seems reasonable to me.

Re: What do you think of this situation?
In light of knowing where you went, I think you were overcharged.
That place isn't that great...
Lesson learned; always, always, ALWAYS ask for a wine list!

Re: What do you think of this situation?
In every restaurant I worked in (casual to fine dining), it was policy to serve the house wine/liquor if the person does not specify brand. In fact, it was an offense that could get you fired if you didn't give the house and tried to give something higher.
This is not only for wine, but for all liquor. If someone asks for a strawberry margarita, you make it with house tequila. Of course you can suggest that they may like the Patron margarita, then if they agree, you just padded your check the right way. If they say no, you must charge for the house tequila and not charge for the mid-priced Jose Cuervo. KWIM?
I certainly would like to find out what Jessica finds out. If the $45 bottle of wine is NOT the chapest at the restaurant for that kind of wine, then it is 100% the waiter's fault.
Again, the OP isn't necessarily saying that she wouldn't spend $45 on wine. It's the principle.

Thanks for clarifying that point! I feel like I was not properly articulating that. I wouldn't necessarily mind spending $45 on wine, but, exactly as you said, when not specifying a brand, I never thought we would get a $45 bottle.

Re: What do you think of this situation?
I don't usually order Merlot (I prefer Cabernet) but I've seen that some restaurants only have a few Merlot choices so I was thinking that $45 could have been their cheapest bottle.
I'm curious which place this was too. Can you FM me? Judging by the reactions of the other posters after finding out ... I'd really like to know.

One of the reviews on Yelp said that they charge $10 for each person who doesn't show in your party. The reviewer said that the restaurant was almost empty when they arrived and when they left.
WHAT!? I eat out in restaurants all the time, in the city no less, and have NEVER heard of such a thing. Just post the name of the place so we can all avoid it
ETA: A lot of places don't have a house wine per say. They may have several different bottles of the same wine by the glass. From what has been said about this place I highly doubt they have a "house wine"

Re: What do you think of this situation?
I'm thinking about this. If you would have ordered wine by the glass, it still probably would not have been cheaper per person even if you ordered house wine, right? How much does a glass of house wine usually cost?

a lot of places have cancellation or no show fees, but i've never heard of them charging you if a member of your party doesn't show.

Exactly. That being said I've never heard of a restaurant actually charging for a no show unless it was a pre planned sit down banquet or something.

I don't know--I'd have to see what the prices are. I mean I have gotten glasses of wine at fairly nice restaurants for $7-$8....so we each had about three glasses...so $21-$24ish...again, I could answer that better when we find out what's on the wine list.

Re: What do you think of this situation?
i think the girls should have asked for the price but i think the waiter should have also let them know what he picked out and how much it costs.
I know nothing about wine so i cannot comment if its expensive or not.
But i wonder if he picked out a really really $$$$$ one what would have happend if they couldnt afford it??!!!

Re: What do you think of this situation?
I side with the girls. The waiter should have clarified.
Having said that $45 for wine isn't bad and if it was a medium level restaurant that is a $18-20 bottle of wine in the store. That's a pretty good bottle of merlot for people who don't care about wine or anyone else for that matter.
So I would not think twice about it and I think the waiter made a good choice for them but he/she should have informed the group.

Not the waiters fault, nor his job to determine the patrons net worth. I always make sure to check the prices on the wine list...
Agree. Totally not the waiters fault. Ask for the prices or request the house wine.
