Re: What do you think of this situation?
I'm surprised that place even carries a $45 dollar bottle of wine. It's a pub trying to be high class

I think this was part of the surprise as well thinking about it. If we were at some other places, I don't think I would have batted an eyelash.

Re: What do you think of this situation?
Now that I know the name of the place i can honestly say the waiter was a do*ch bag. They have a special on thier website for $17 bottles of wine on thursdays. This tells me that they carry $20-$25 bottles of wine.

I called the restaurant since they don't have their menu or winelist up at present and I am getting a fax of both this afternoon
I will update BUT from the reviews I've read, it's probably overpriced from soup to nuts. it has VERY iffy reviews and a lot of that revolves around the service.
we shall see!
WOW ! You are really getting into this!
Let us know the result!
almost everything else is boring today. and it's a welcome distraction to my work day. it just seems like such a dickish thing to do. at least if I see that the dude did give them the cheapest bottle (which is what I think would have been the RIGHT thing to do if he didn't talk to them about price at all) then I could give it a rest.
but if I am the only one "into" it, I'll just keep the results to my nosey bored self
I'm curious!!!
It won't really change my opinion of the situation though, unless for some reason the $45 was the most expesnive on the list. We're all waiting to find out

And this is why I didn't automatically say "it's the girl's fault, 100%."
I would trust someone (Jamms here) to know the kind of establishment and vibe they were in and if they felt something was off or unexpected, they are probably right...especially if they are used to dining out, KWIM?
I would be surprised also if a bottle of wine was that much at that place...other places, no.

Honestly, no. I've tried playing devil's advocate in my mind, but I would really be surprised. Maybe they'd have a $45 wine available, but I would assume most would be priced lower, even with the mark-up.
I've dined at places from A to Z as far as cost, and this would surprise me from this establishment.
It would be like if I added on a side salad worth 2.99 to my order at Chilis and then my bill said it was 15.99. Just would be a little surprising.

I've been to this place a few times and I wouldn't be surprised if $45 is the most expensive bottle they had. If I had to guess, the average bottle in this place would be $25ish.

well ain't you speaking the truth!
FTR, when I found out the place I felt the waiter padded the bill with giving them a more expensive bottle of wine.
And to the person who said it's pub trying to be an upscale restaurant, you hit the nail RIGHT on the head.

I completely agree with this BUT it is still the customer's responsibility to know what they are buying. Was thee waiter a jerk? Sure. And if I was his/her boss I'd definitely discipline them had I found out about the situation. But the bottom line is the bottom line

Re: What do you think of this situation?
Someone PLEASE fm me the name of the place. I didn't find it on google and now I'm dying to know.
If it is really like everyone says then I stand corrected. I was picturing a restaurant where $45 was mid-low range. Any place that will charge that kind of a no-show fee seems like the kind of place where waiters would rip off patrons.

Re: What do you think of this situation?
Was the waiter supposed to say "what are you looking to spend?"
$45 could have easily been their house bottle or well near the bottom of the list.
$45 is not extravagant for anywhere! Olive Garden has $45 bottles of wine! Friday's has $45 bottles of wine!
You will never find wine for liquor store prices at restaurants. Wine is how these places make their $$$$$.

if anyone is typing in EXACTLY what I said i googled, that may be the problem. i don't remember exactly what words i used, in what order (hence why i said "something to that effect").

just to sum up, this place is a PUB. if Friday's cheapest bottle of wine is $45, then I will eat my shorts.
this place advertises a $17/bottle night on their website.
the girls SHOULD HAVE been slightly more involved in the choice, but I have to say I would not have expected that price either at this type of place. by halves.
