What exactly do I need for diaper changing?
I have NOTHING except for baby powder... so what do I have to buy? vaseline? desitin? balmex? something else? I am sooo clueless. I actually never changed a diaper before . If it makes a difference I am having a boy and he will be circumsized. Thanks

Re: What exactly do I need for diaper changing?
Wipes
In the beginning, as you will see, hospitals dont use wipes, just towelettes and vaseline.
You wont be using most of that stuff for a bit and hopes he dosent suffer an rashes.
Even powder isnt necessary.
You will be fine. Once u do one diaper change, you become a pro

Re: What exactly do I need for diaper changing?
Other than diapers and wipes, the only thing I used was Balmex. I reccomend Balmex because it gets rid of diaper rash much faster than Desitin or A&D.

Re: What exactly do I need for diaper changing?
Don't feel bad, the first time I changed a diaper was in the hospital when dd was born....I was told you do not need to use anything unless there is a rash, but I am not sure if it is different for a boy.
I know that baby powder is a no-no though

For cleaning the circumcision, we used gauze pads, and neosporin.

Re: What exactly do I need for diaper changing?
never used powder, just wipes and diapers. then when she would poopie and I saw a lil redness on tushie I would put arbonne herbal diaper rash cream. I tried balmax and desitin- didnt work, I LOVE arbonne. for a boy def get vaseline you will need to put a ton on his circumcison
you may want to get some aquafor for any dry skin patches on face/feet and hands thats the only thing the derm said you can use for newborns+.
you will be a great mommy!!! my first diaper change was at the hospital with DD, I was so nervous
just wanted to add DD has never had a diaper rash but when I saw any indication of redness and I used balmax/destin and A&D the redness didnt go away as I expected so I switched to Arbonne and poof redness gone in next diaper change- I truly think that cream has a soothing affect.

At every diaper change I use petrolieum jelly. He has never had a diaper rash. If he gets a little red I use balmex.

Re: What exactly do I need for diaper changing?
In the beginning you will need Vaseline for his circumcision. The hospital had individual packages so I took a ton of those at first. We just put a ton of vaseline on his area and put the diaper over it. The tubes they gave me were great because I didnt have to touch it which I was afraid to do in case I hurt him. I still use Vaseline to prevent diaper rash.
I also have balmex but only use that if his tush seems overly red.
At first we used wet gauze to clean him, no wipes, again we got this from the hospital. By about 10 days we started using sensitive wipes. Other than that, you just need diapers.
Just ask the nusery nurse and she will show you how to do anything from diaper changing, burping, swaddling etc.

Same here - we have always used a wipe with every changing a little bit of vaseline - never any diaper rash. Only irratation occasionally and then we use the Balmex

I'm on team too and a friend recommend a PeePee TeePee to cover his bits during diaper changes so we don't get hosed?? I haven't seen this thingie yet, but will probably add it to my changing station!!!

vaseline is great - those newborn poops are like tar. The vaseline eases clean up.

I remember before my son was born we took a parenting class and the woman told us to put a little olive oil on the babies behind so the meconium (first poos) would not stick to it. Well I never did this and let me tall you I wish I had because you are right the first poo is like tar.

pampers diapers pampers sensitive wipes balmex aquaphor petroleum jelly rubbing alcohol q-tips cotton balls guaze purell
This is a great list! I used all of these things with my son except I used A&D ointment instead of Balmex (but I had the Balmex in the drawer as well).
A few things to add: - Triple Paste* - Butt Paste* - Disposable wash clothes (take as many as you can from the hospital)
*Probably won't need in the beginning but good to have on hand for the bad cases of diaper rash...plus you never know...a lot of their reactions to things result in diaper rash (reaction to formula, colds)
Also...little boys don't require too much work cleaning since everything is on the outside...but in the beginning I was instructed at the child care class and by my pediatrician to gently push back on the skin (DS was circumsized) when cleaning to prevent the skin from fusing together. You don't have to do anything crazy, just as you are cleaning him hold the base (you're touching his skin) down to create a natural pull. Sorry if it sounds weird but it's really not that bad and it's better to prevent the skin from fusing. You do this after it heals.
Oh and be prepared....when they bring him back to you it will be bright bright red...like rudolph's nose.

That is basically what I have, plus some wash cloths and a little toy. I put out Butt Paste and lotion, instead of Balmex and Aquaphor. I have clothes in the dress below the changing station so I didn't add any to the things that are out. In a basket nearby I have other items I may need, like the thermometer and nail clippers, but I tend to be over prepared for everything!

Re: What exactly do I need for diaper changing?
I never used vaseline or diaper cream and my kids have never had a diaper rash. Just be sure to change his diaper regularly.
Forget the pee-teepee, waste of money IMO. When you change his diaper before taking off the soiled one, open up the clean one and have it handy.
Wipes warmer also a waste.... Just hold the wipe in the palm of your hand for a few secs to take the chill out.
Don't worry you'll be fine.

I agree. If my DS pees when I take off the diaper, it's usually in the first few seconds, before I would be able to get that thing on him and it's just another thing to clean.
I just had diapers, wipes and some A&D. In the beginning, until the circumcision healed, we used vaseline and gauze pads. I think I also used wet paper towels for the first 2 weeks instead of wipes.
