i think a sleep sac the babys feet and arms can move freely where the swaddle confines them

What the PP said is pretty accurate. I have to recommend to you the miracle blanket for swaddling - its amazing!
Swaddling helps the baby sleep by not allowing the arms or to move at all... my dd would wake herself up with her arms if she was not swaddled. A sleep sack usually has sleeves and the arms are totally free.

For those who aren't comfortable putting a blanket in the crib - it's basically a wearable blanket (comes in an array of materials, from light cotton up to fleece).

Sleep sacks are amazing! The girl I watch used them for years and was always comfortable sleeping. As for the swaddlers, they are good for when baby is young and it confines them and makes them feel more safe... Kinda like mimicking being in the womb.
