What is your opinion on dying hair during pregnancy?

My OB said it's okay if I were to dye my hair after 12 weeks. I'm a few days past 12 and desperately need a dye job, even though my OB said it's okay I'm still worried.

I'd like to see everyone else's opinion, would you or wouldn't you?

I don't know about dying the whole head, but I felt comfortable with just highlights and some lowlights with a nonbleach dye.

I do, but I waited until after the first trimester. I also try to stretch it out as long as possible in between so it's not as often. If I was just doing it for color and not to cover my ridiculous amount of grays I would probably skip it though.

I am a hairdresser who has colored hundreds of p/g women and I have been colored myself during both p/g's
I truly think it is fine and even my doc said there is ZERO evidence that it causes any harm. And as far as the fumes go, I breathed it in all 9 months with DD and so far this time, as did all the other mommies I work with, and our kids are all fine. So go, relax and pamper yourself, you deserve it!

I personally wont do it. The fumes in the salon are enough to make ME dizzy... Ive head you shouldnt paint b/c of fumes... I think hair dye is 100 times worse. Im sure highlights are fine and many do it, I just dont want to risk any exposure... so therefore I have bad roots! OH WELL!!

I get high/lo lights and that is fine because it doesn't touch your scalp. My hairdresser also does a semi-permanent, non-amonia, protein based color to cover my grays and she told me it is perfectly safe. I trust her and know plenty of people who have done it and everything is fine!

I got highlights and was sure my hair guy did not put it on my scalp..all was well but I know if you are talking about dye it seeps into your scalp so I guess I would not go for dye and maybe try only highlights

I got highlights twice and DS was perfectly healthy. My hairdresser said it was fine!

My doctor told me to wait until I was 6 months pg. I just got highlights done on saturday and I am 32 weeks. Both she and my hairdresser said it was fine because they don't touch the scalp. The fumes didn't make me dizzy or nasuaes at all.

My doc told me not to do any haircoloring... That while there is no evidence that it causes harm there is no evidence that it DOESN'T cause harm.... I can wait.... it's only 9 months.

I normally color and highlite my hair but since I found out I was pregnant i've been highliting only. I would rather not do either but my roots are so grey that I have to.

My doctor said highlighting is fine, but not full head of color where it sits on the scalp. However, I had my hair dyed 3 days before my BFP because I didnt know(I always get it highlighted and figures this time I did the full head). I specifically wouldnt do it again because when I did it and didnt know I was pregnant, it burned and it never has before....that made me wonder what it could do to the baby....the dr. said I did it so early that it was ok since we dont share a bloodstream yet, but the burning made me nervous. Since then I got a vegetable dye once and that was it.

I appreciate everyone's response and after doing some more thinking and reading your replies I decided I am going to hold off on the hair dye. I may get my hair highlighted being it doesn't touch the scalp, I may also consider having my colorist use vegetable dye for now.

I have had my hair colored twice so far, but I waited till 18 weeks for the first time.

My doctor and my hair dresser said as long as it doesn't touch the scalp you are fine. I did not do it with my first pregnancy and I am not sure if I'm going to do it this time. It's one of those things that I would just feel horrible about if something happened. But I've never heard of anything happening so that makes me think, what's the big deal?

I get my hair highlighted only so I have been getting my hair done from the start of both my pregnancy's, dr said it was fine!

I dyed my hair with DD (I also painted as well), but I think I did it during the middle of the 2nd tri.

And I just had my hair dyed (semi-permanent) during this pregnancy and I'm in my 2nd tri. The OB gave me the ok.

I did it at 8 weeks and in my 3rd trimester - it was fine!

I waited until 11 or 12 weeks then I did it less often than I would have if I was not pregnant. I think it was 2 more times after that.

If you asked 10 doctors, you get 10 different answers. Do what you feel is right.

My doctor told me there is not enough research out there to know the effects, but she recommended that I waited 12 weeks. I did. After than I resumed my normal single process and highlights. I think I got it done 3 or 4 times during my pregnancy and my baby is fine.

i think hair dying in general is harmful to your body, so I personally wouldn't do it during pregnancy. you just never know what the long-term effects could be.

I got mine highlighted and single process at 13 weeks... couldn't wait any longer!!!!

I died my full head at 14 weeks. I just told my hair dresser just in case. My dr was more concerned about the fumes than the actual dye on my head.

I used Natural Instincts to color my hair at 25 weeks, and then again last week at 31.5 weeks. I probably won't bother doing it again before the baby is born.

I've heard all the different opinions, but I figured that using a temporary dye that sits on wet hair for all of 10 minutes is probably better than going to a salon to get highlights for however many minutes and breathing in all those fumes. Besides, I hate the way I look with highlights almost as much as I hate the way I look with gray hair.
