What kind of lighting do you use in your rooms?
We are having a dormer added to my parents house. Are high hats and track lighting the same thing? If not, I was thinking high hats in the kitchen, track lighting in dining room and possibly living room too (or maybe high hats) and lamps in the bedrooms. What do you girls have?

Re: What kind of lighting do you use in your rooms?
High hats are usually inserted into the ceiling. Track lighting is installed on the selling. The effect is similar in my opinion as for the amount of light & how it is dispersed. It is more a matter of preference on the look of it I guess. We have high hats in our condo & barely ever use them. I defin suggest having them on dimmers, and using energy efficient bulbs from the start. I personally find them to be too much. I am sensitive w/ light, and enjoy our cheap paper Ikea lamps with the energy saver bulbs the best. Lol. If I was just doing them I prob would only do them in the kitchen. The dining room I would do a nice center fixture, and use lamps in the rest of the house. Floor lamps, table lamps. I find them to be cozier.

We have high hats throughout.......but they are all on dimmers so they all don't have to be so bright at the same time.

IMO, track lighting can look someone dated depending on the fixtures. I would go with hi hats.

Highhats and fixtures... no track lighting, very 80's.

Re: What kind of lighting do you use in your rooms?
Track lighting looks great if you have a very modern or industrial looking home, otherwise as others have stated, they can look dated.
We generally use different types of lighting in each room depending on function & atmosphere.
Family Room: high-hats (dimmer), sconces (dimmer) and table lamp Dining Room: chandelier (dimmer) and we've been discussing adding sconces and small high-hats (all would be on dimmers) Hallway: flush mount ceiling lights (dimmers) Kitchen: chandelier (dimmer) and fluorescent lighting (which I hate, but we haven't remodeled yet.) Bathroom: High-hats (dimmer) and overhead vanity lighting (dimmer) Master Bedroom: High-hates (dimmer) and sconces (dimmer) Kid's Rooms: Ceiling Fans with lights (but I do have sconces that need to be installed in one room and we might be removing the ceiling fans altogether.)

Re: What kind of lighting do you use in your rooms?
living room - lamps (although my parents have high hats maybe because they have catedral ceilings)
kitchen- high hats
bedrooms - fan with light
hallway - light fixture one of those half globe type ones
