I grew up in a traditional 3 bedrm split and my DH & I bought what they termed a 'sugar maple' 4 br split which is a little diff than the one my parents have because it has an extra br. Ours is the doorway is on the ground floor and you enter to a foyer, den and guest bedroom and bath and door to basement on lower level, then you go up a small flight of stairs to the living room, kitchen and DR, then a larger set of stairs to the BR's ...laundry is in basement.

For my next house, I want a Colonial because I have always preferred bedrooms on a diff floor for privacy, but now that I'm living in split with a baby, I HATE all the diff stairs esp with laundry in basement.....it is very annoying.

ETA: Colonials have larger second floors, and I have found living in my house now that our bedrooms are just not big enough because in splits, the second floors are not the same size as the living area floor - they are smaller.

My favorite is a Craftsman Bungalow...followed closely by a Tudor.

I just love the wood details in both styles.

I also love Salt Box's and the East Coast Shingle style.

My second cousins live in a tudor and they are very beautiful but the big problem with those as they always say is the lack of closet space.....and also typically smaller rooms.

I love Tudors but I really want a sprawling L shaped ranch.

I like tudors and victorian homes for their character. However, IMO, you are somewhat limited with decor for those type of houses. Maybe it's just me, but I can't see contemporary-style furniture fitting in. Maybe I'm wrong.

The house I am buying is called a "contemporary." I think the layout is really cool.

I have a colonial and always wanted one... However, I think for my next house (if we ever move) I would prefer an open layout ranch w/ cathedral ceilings (something I can't have in my colonial)...

I have also decided that I hate stairs!

DH wants to kill me b/c when we were looking at houses he wanted the ranch and I insisted on the colonial...

An old colonial, which is what we have. I'd like an additional 1,000 sq. ft., but it's big enough for two.
