What type of name do you prefer?
What type of name do you prefer?
Very common, with a common spelling, like David or Elizabeth. Uncommon spelling of a common name, like Dayvd or Elyzbeth Uncommon name, but the spelling uses common spelling rules, like Hubert or Cornelia. Uncommon spelling of an uncommon name, like Pilot Inspektor (Jason Lee's son) or Jermajesty (Jermaine Jackson's son)
Our two DC have very common spellings of very common names.

Either very common name with the common spelling or an uncommon name with a conventional spelling.
I honestly feel that parents who use inventive spelled names for a common name are setting their children up for an unnecessarily difficult life.

What type of name do you prefer?
Just a normal name.
I love the “I need name suggestions but I don’t want anything common”. Because then all the suggestions are common names these days.
An uncommon name would be Mike or Jennifer these days!!!!

Agree. DD’s name is usually considered a nickname. People do sometimes call her by the “proper” form. I knew this would happen and deal with it but it drives DH nuts. DD did ask me once if her name was really xx because teacher called her the wrong name so maybe I set her up for disappointment it’s not a difficult name to spell or pronounce nor is it uncommon in any way.

What type of name do you prefer?
My sons both have common names with common spellings, but they're not overly popular names (I think one is in the 500s and one is in the 200s on the social security website).
I have a common name with an uncommon spelling, and it's a nightmare. It's a family name, and the uncommon spelling is an older spelling of that name that just isn't used anymore, but it was my grandmother's name. However, everyone assumes my parents did it to be creative or different, and I've gotten more than a few condescending comments from older men about it, which always makes me wonder what others think about it but keep to themselves.

Re: What type of name do you prefer?
My name is Aimee and I have always loved how it was spelled. I named my daughter a similar common name, but with a different vowel than is usually used. I absolutely love her name and could give a crap about what anyone else thinks. My son on the otherhand, has a common spelling of a very common name. Many people tried to talk me out of naming him that because they said that it was too common. I feel like you are darned it you do and you are darned if you don't.

Re: What type of name do you prefer?
Well, no matter the name, I prefer common spellings. I think “common” name could be up for interpretation though; for example, my oldest DD is Katherine which could be considered common, but I seldom see a girl around her age with the same name. All my kids have those sort of names. Now that I think of it though, my oldest has a very UNcommon middle name, so much so that most people have never even heard of it

What type of name do you prefer?
So my daughter’s name is Layla, but we spell it Leila, which is actually the true Arabic spelling of the name. But some call her “Leela” or “Lila”
It’s kind of annoying, but I still don’t prefer the spelling Layla and am happy with the spelling. My son is Keenan, not sure else you would spell that one lol.
It does bug me when people spell regular names strangely just to be different.

What type of name do you prefer?
My name is Alison - which is a common name and a common spelling but, since Allison is also a common spelling - more than 50% of the time my name is spelled wrong.
So I prefer a common name with a common spelling.

What type of name do you prefer?
Common name, common spelling.
My name is totally “normal” but often misspelled with a C instead of K, which annoys me. I can’t imagine going through life as a “Paysleigh” or “Landynn” and having to spell and pronounce my name everywhere for the rest of my life.

Saaaaaaame!!!!! My whole life it's been "K or C? En or In?" It's so annoying! I swore I would only name my kids common names with common spellings especially because my last name is a little annoying and mispronounced. My friend named her daughter Rylee. Why??? Just do it the normal way!!

Re: What type of name do you prefer?
I voted: Uncommon name, but the spelling follows common spelling rules. We named our DD Gianna, and while I thought that was pretty uncommon, she had a classmate in 1st grade who was Gianna also. And her last name was 2 letters diff than ours. And our last name is as uncommon as you can get. It was wild.
And, I'm sure I've said this before, but my name is Stacey and everyone, EVERYONE spells it Stacy. Even as a reply to an email where I clearly just signed it S t a c e y. I was also always asked growing up: y or ey? And when I meet someone with my name who spells it the same way I do, it's like we're in some sort of secret club. Lol.

lol good point. My son has a classic name, when we were kids there was at least one in every class, today he is the only kid his age that we know (there is one boy in his school that uses the same nickname while his full name is actually a different greek name) with the name but the "unique" names have one in every class.
My DD has a less common, less classic name and I know a couple kids around her age with the name lol

What type of name do you prefer?
My son has a somewhat common name (250 most common) with a common spelling.
Speaking from a teacher standpoint, I like common names with common spellings.
Speaking from my son's Kindergarten perspective, he also likes common names. More than half his class has names he has never heard before and it is difficult for him to remember them.

DD has like 4 Gianna's in her grade. that's funny.
Another one that confuses me is Michele vs. Michelle. I work with a Michele. I have a few mom friends that are Michele. I have one girl on the west coast here who is Michelle I always have to remember which one I am speaking to when I am texting or emailing

I had a friend growing up, very Irish, with a very Irish name. She hated it! Now she has her own kids- all with super Irish names... Aoife, Siobhan, Niamh, and Saoirse.

Niamh is Neave

There are a lot of Irish folks in our community.
We also have a lot of Ciaras (Kiera) and Caoimhes (Keeva)

Re: What type of name do you prefer?
i chose common with common spelling, but as i'm drawn towards older names, i wonder if they would be considered "uncommon".
my DH has a lot of rules for names: no feelings (so no Faith or Hope), no occupations/verbs )so no Hunter or Cooper) no gender neutral names, no names of people he dislikes.
I'm luck we only have one kid because picking another name would be a nightmare. LOL
