I think a lot of the salaries and pensions are crazy. I'm more shocked that my old gym teacher ( who did nothing ) is taking home a larger pension than my old SS teacher. That man was the best, I still could tell you how the Iroquios Indians came about And the kit and caboodle.

Great thread and I totally agree that the salaries are high, it def is among the highest in the nation.

. I'm an attorney and not earning some of these salaries. I do real estate closings on the side and did several re-fi closings for teachers in Franklin Square, Woodmere and Lynbrook who were only 40 something and pulling in 135k or more per year....Chat Icon

That seethroughny.net site also lists salary for all NY state and NYC employees...and I think it's fantastic because it should be public information!

Another issue I am torn on. The supers salaries can be astronomical..and I am unsure why. I would assume the salaries for state works are public because don't they have to do with tax dollars? I could be wrong. Anyway, I think a lot of the misunderstanding or animosity towards teacher salaries are this: you get a large salary (typically) and even though you have lots of work to do after at home, you also have a good amount of the year off. I think if teachers got paid less, people would view it as a trade-off...... Average salary, work less days during the year. I know they have it hard and high expectations these days and it is a big responsibility. Even though many say the required master degrees are costly, most people have master degrees in lots of industries and never get to see the money back from the amount they invested in. But people can't complain... They could have went for teaching themselves or still can, now...but most teachers didn't go into it for the money, they did it to teach.

Some of those Superintendent salaries are ridiculous! Yes, their job is stressful and many (but not all) have doctorates. But... so do college professors, and they're not making anywhere near that!

And there are about 130 SD's on LI! No one on LI would ever agree to this, but consolidating districts would be much more cost efficient. We'd have the same # of kids, so the # of teachers would be the same. But do we really need 130 Sup's making 250K+ a year of our tax dollars?

I think if you opt for a job working for the public, your salary information should be public. For me it's what truly is checks & balances & it's in the public's interest to be able to see how much someone is making. If you want that privacy, work for the private sector. We do pay their salaries & I want to be able to see if I feel a public agency has an abuse (not saying that's in the case of the teachers).

As for the high salaries of superintendents, I do think newspapers have a tendency to try to find "scandal" where there is none. I see nothing scandalous about someone making over six figures & living on LI. They printed the LIRR salaries like it was a big expose - meanwhile in my opinion the only thing they were doing wrong was mismanaging overtime rather than hiring additional workers. But a guy who works 20 hours of OT a week, go ahead pay him the six figures he deserves.

I think teachers need to be educated on a level that not many sectors do. They have to teach, while wearing a million different hats - playing pseudo-social worker, pseudo-psychologist, pseudo-parent. They manage to do this for 18-25 students. Pay them six figures in my opinion...

As for superintendents, how much do they deserve? They are essentially the CEO of several mini-corporations. I think they deserve what they earn.

Of course there are always the teachers/supers that are slackers, that are bad teachers, poor managers, that are just going through the motions - but in all honesty you remember the bad ones & the great ones more than the good ones, which there are plenty.

Re: What would you say is the "average" salary a school superintendant makes on LI

The amount of money I have paid for my bachelors degree, Masters degree and extra 60 college credits on top of that of professional development allow me to make that salary. I have been teaching for 9 years and just finished taking all the courses necessary to reach my top pay.

I aslo understand that as a gov't employee my salary is public knowledge and I am fine with that. I constantly have to defend myself and the salary I make and usually it is to people who have no clue what it takes to become a teacher, or to stay a teacher, or the amount of work that goes into a teachers day. I have never said that 1 profession makes too much money because I have never had another profession.

My husband is a mortgage broker and a realtor and some years he makes more than me and some years he makes less than me. He works a lot more than I do, but atleast I don't have to hear all the negative crap out if his mouth because he understands why teachers make what they do and he realizes as an adult he chose his profession knowing what the salary was like.

Yes, some of these superintendents are making crazy money, but they are the ones that have been in the district their entire careers, they have phd's and when they retire I am almost positive anew person will not be making that salary

All public employee's salaries are public information.

Exactly!!! If my tax dollars are paying your salary, I should know what you're getting paid.

Sure, I think you should. It is soooooo easyChat Icon

I can't understand why it is okay to list teacher's salaries publicy. I am a NYC teacher and do not make close to the numbers you see online at that site, but this is so unfair.

What an invasion of privacy. and I'm sorry when did fixing computers become more important than educating children.

woah...calm urself. for realz. i'm not saying it more important, but one would think and IT professional would make more than a teacher. he does more than just "fix" computers, btw.

im not saying teaching is an easy job. i know its not. a lot of my friends are teachers. but to see some of the salaries, its really a LOT of money.

you can "calm" YOURSELF. When you are required to have a Bachelors, a Masters, and then continue to PAY FOR professional development to maintain a certification, you deserve what you make and NYC teachers do NOT make enough to cover those costs.

And as far as our salaries being public information, it IS an invasion of our privacy and I do NOT care if you think your tax dollars pay my salary.

I challenge any non-teacher to step into my inner city classroom for one week and if you make it out alive and okay, I'll give up my certification. Those who can TEACH!! Those who can't complain about teachers.

I never understand why people complain about teacher's salaries - they are teaching our FUTURE!

Although I am certified as a teacher, and consult with schools, I work all summer long and make less than most teachers, and I still say they deserve their salaries!

I saw the drama in this thread coming a mile away. It's nice to see some support for us teachers.

You also have to understand that not only do we have to maintain a level of professional development credits on top of our masters degrees, but most of us have been in the same district for our entire careers. I've been teaching in my district for 14 years. Bare minimum cost of living increases alone brings me up to what some would call a "high" salary.

ETA: I started at 29K...not exactly eating lobster and filet mignon on that salary.

I am a LI teacher and I deserve what I make. I work extremely hard and take home hours of work each night. I also have numerous planning hours every weekend. I have over 115 students that I teach and am responsible for each and every day. I need to contact their parents if they dont do their homework or do poorly on a test. From September to June I cannot read a book for pleasure because I do not have the time. So I deserve my salary. Maybe you should become a teacher and see how difficult it really is, because many people try it and dont make it past their first year. My first year I cried every day.

Well said. Chat Icon

lemme put the salary thing into perspective: i'm looking to get out. i LOVE what i do, but i'm tired of my personal life not being my own. and i'm def tired of ungrateful parents and politicians b*itching about me while i work my tail off. i'm def tired of reading in the paper about how i'm destroying the future of america. ignorance begins at home.

i'm an awesome teacher. kids and parents clamor for spots in my class. i'm smart. i'm hard-working. i'm highly educated and $50,000 in debt as a result. i'm innovative. i'm fully capable of making more money doing something else.

you want talent? you gotta pay for it. good luck with what's left over when the witch hunt's done.

Just curious, what do people think the salaries of LI Superintendents/teachers/admins or teachers in general SHOULD be earning? If these salaries are too high, what should they be lowered to? What should the "pyramid" of earnings be in our society? Who should make more than whom? Not being snarky, just genuinely curious what people think/feel.

I think $650K seems perfectly reasonable to me! I'm sad that my superintendent doesn't make that- maybe i'll write a letter asking them to raise my taxes so that he/she could Chat Icon Chat Icon

I really dont care what teachers make and would never say that they didn't deserve it. I get that teachers feel attacked and get on the defensive, but i never understand- when this conversation comes up- why teachers go on and on about how hard they work and schooling, etc. Honestly, many jobs have the same requirements. It's the choice you make. I don't complain about wounds that smell like death or people sh*tting on me (i mean, literal feces... not in the connotative sense Chat Icon ) because it's the choice i made. I just don't understand the endless monologues about the trials and tribulations, because, in all fairness, every profession has them.

i think it's because no one makes comments on other peoples salaries. so we feel as if we HAVE to defend what we make. you hardly here people comment on any other profession and how they make too much, just teachers. so in a way, we are always on the defensive. i would never comment to anyone that they make too much at their job, but people feel like it's not rude to do that in regard to teachers. i just rambled..sorry Chat Icon

ETA: most teachers i know complain about what we do. we are very greatful for our scheduled and truly appreciate our time off. not saying no one else deserves that, but in teaching it comes with the territory. other jobs have their own perks, this is ours.

I get so sick of hearing we pay your salaries. And you know what, when we pay for various services (whatever companies you work for) we pay your salaries, so why can't we see yours???

Salaries are getting paid through all of our dollars so to hear people specifically saying they pay OUR salaries as if nobody paid theirs is garbage!

As some PPs said before, yes there are some bad teachers or lazy ones, esp who you may know or remember vividly and disagree with how much they make, but for those of us who work or butts off, in school, out of school, at home, during the summer and holidays, we do work hard and do not deserve to be put down for what we make. I can't speak for all professions, but I can tell you, a teacher's job does not end when the bell rings or they walk out that door. Many other professions deserve what they make, and in no way, am I saying they don't deserve their salaries, or teachers work harder than anyone else. It's just that other professions are not having their salaries broadcasted and attacked by the public.
