ETA: Here's what the lunch basket looked like in the set I got from Costco. Amazon has it for $15 for just the lunch. I got all three meals for $19.....

I have the same problem as you know, they will be 2 on Thanksgiving and then Christmas is a month later. I like doing the bigger (physically and cost-wise) stuff for their birthday and then keeping Christmas small.
Birthday -
Rock and Roll (or whatever its called) Elmo and accessories
Boy doll (with zippers and stuff to learn to dress)
Stroller for the doll, it was $8 so I just got it
Train table from my parents
Step 2 double sided easel
Mobigos from ILs
Kidcraft table and chairs set from their Godmother
Christmas -
Melissa and Doug puzzles
Melissa and Doug play food for their kitchen and also some pots and pans
Mr. Potatohead
I asked grandparents/uncles to get:
art supplies
books
trains for the train table
small cars/trucks
maybe some Little People stuff like the jungle or farm.
They play a lot with their shopping carts, Melissa and Doug puzzles and latches board, shape sorters, trains/cars/trucks.

oh, we are also taking him to the Opera with his cousins to see Hansel and Gretel. (it's their annual holiday production geared towards kids)  I can't wait.
This sounds so nice! Where is the performance being held? I'm going to keep this in mind for next year.
Santa is getting DS a toy vacuum & a thomas train set.
Family is already asking what to get DS but I haven't given much thought to anything else other then what we are getting him.

I was going to buy him a bicycle but we will probably get him that for his 3rd birthday in the spring. He won't be able to ride his bike in the cold.

DS will be almost 22 months at Christmas. We're in an apt with limited space and he already has a tonnnnn of toys and we also have baby 2 on the way so we need room for the baby stuff to be out like you do! So his list will be mostly small stuff.
So far I have:
Books
Matching/memory game
Stickers
Tickle Monster book set with the tickle mitts
Pottery barn bath wrap
Toddler sleep sacks
Wood name puzzle
Potty and the DVD "potty power"
Table and chair(s) from ikea
Fisher price apptivity case (to put dh's old iTouch in)
"big" gift idea is a Maclaren Volos stroller and urban toddler bundle me for it
Everyting is pretty small and not too expensive. We'll get him a few things and let our parents and closest friends who ask choose from the rest.

That's awesome!!! I found those sets on Amazon last year and never got around to getting them. I'm going to try to hit Costco today! Poor DS is cooking his Mr Potato Head as I type! 
I forgot to add on my "already got him list"... The Target B brand microphone and travel aqua doodle with accessory pack of extra brushes/pens.

Got it today! Almost passed it up as there was a traffic debacle in that aisle so I missed it on the first loop! The Costco in Holbrook has them near the kitchen set. Look for a tall blue box. There is so much labeling, the food is not really jumping out at you through the box window.
I also got DS a Kidkraft Easel for $75 at Costco. Amazon has it for $150. It has the same pic of the girl on the box. I'm going to take it out of the trunk and check out the quality before I let months go by.

side note - if anyone is looking for an easel - IKEA has an awesome one too. Chalk on one side, paper roll on the other for $15

Magna doodle type toy. (Its from a catalog)
We are considering the Leap Pad, but haven't decided on it yet.
Other then that, just stocking stuffers. We are going very easy this year. He already has so many toys and will get much more from grandparents.
