Re: What's the going rate for a Bar Mitzvah gift?
For two, I'd say $118 would be good.
I had also gotten lots of $25 (from those who were not jewish and didn't know about the number 18) and $36 (from those who were jewish or knew about the number 18) checks when I was a kid, but those were from 1 child my own age.
Adults who came as a couple gave $108-$180 and that was back when catering halls were much cheaper.
I also had gotten a lot of jewelry but I always hated jewelry as a kid and even as an adult now, I am very picky about it.
So I'd say $118 or any $18 increment would be very generous and nice.

I just went to one too this weekend in North Carolina. I actually gave 136.00 because I was told the number 36.00 was important. It was out of state for us and the whole trip cost us almost 1000.00 with hotel, car and food.
Since the number 36 is a multiple of 18 it was important (still meaning Chai)...so what you gave was right.
I was always told as long as the last two numbers were a multiple of 18 or ending in 18 it was still meaning Chai. When I got married, DH and I got many checks and cash with 18, 36, and 54 as the two ending numbers in the amount.
For a Bar Mitzvah though for the amounts people are giving sound to be in the range that I would give.

We give a multiple of Chai. Usually $360.
It is important to remember that a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is more than just a 13 year old's birthday party. At least it is to me. It is the culmination of years of intense study. Regardless of whether or not a family chooses to have a backyard BBQ or a catering hall event, it is very meaningful. DH and I have already started to save for Abby and Jeremy's special moments. All of MY Bat Mitzvah gifts were invested and partially financed college.

When I take your suggestion and convert, I'm definitely inviting you to my bat mitzvah!

Whats 18?
Its Chai, it is has a spiritual meaning in Judaism, sort of good luck! I got lots of $36 dollar checks for my Bat Mitzvah back in 1993!
I saw $150 is probably very generous.
The hebrew word Chai means Life. every word in hebrew has a numerical value and the numerical value of the hebrew word Chai is 18 which is why gifts are usually given in multiples of 18
