What's up with people calling baby boys...
Mama??? 
Having two girls first, this is something I had never noticed before. But now, I can't tell you how many people have called my son "mama!" Two in the past week alone!
Are people used to me having only girls? Do I have a feminine-looking son? Or is "mama" something that is normal and natural to call a male?

I do... ...I think it's more of an affection/italian thing..lol..I call my daughter mamma nonna ..everyone laughs when I do..I swear I never call her by her name...,I know that is so bad...but she is just such a little mamma nonna to me.

I've heard it done all my life....not sure if its an Italian thing but they always call the lil boys "Mommy"

i don't understand when people call their little boys "daddy". that is just so weird to me!! i've never heard that before. although in ever heard the mama thing either

I've been hearing it my whole life. My dads parents and family were born in Italy and they always calls baby boys mama..I call dd that all the time lol, and I never even think about it.

I had never heard it before I met my DH - his mom calls him "mama" or "mami" (They are Italian). I thought it was sooooo strange but it rubbed off on me and now, on occasion, I call both my kids mama.

My grandma has called me "mommy" and "grandma" as long as I can remembe, even my boy cousin.. Maybe its an Italian thing...but, its totally rubbed off on me. I use it as a term of endearment...even with boys.

omg I thought i was the only one who got irritated with that. I don't like that pet name either for boys. I also don't like the pet name Mama for little girls. I'M the mama in the house, not my 2 month old daughter. lol. But I'm just not a petname person in general.
As for the original post - I've never heard that being said to a BOY before. How funny!

Same here. I never had heard it before until DH's family (they're Italian). Since I've now been hearing it for girls and boys for about 8 years now, I'm used to it and use it sometimes as well. Just a term of endearment.

I think it's so weird!! I've heard it a handful of times and it's always so strange to me. I don't like it for little girls either, though. I feel like it must be confusing for them!

I come from an Italian family and when DS was a newborn I would call him mama. I think it was just something I had heard growing up.

I have no idea where it comes from, cause my mother never did it. It just comes out of my mouth sometimes, I don't even realize I'm doing it. In fact even I thought I was a weirdo when I realized I was doing it.
I am also guilty of calling DS little man. My poor child, I am a big petname person and I call him everything but his name. I have to make a real attempt everyday to say his full name so he doesn't grow up thinking his name is crazy pants
