Re: What's up with people calling baby boys...
SIL calls her DS that and first time i heard it i did a double take cause i was like did you just refer to your son as a girl? Then I thought ok maybe shes heard ppl calling each other mama like you do with your gf's "hey mama". but now after reading all of your posts im thinking maybe its an italian thing? but MIL has never called DH mama. Idk. It through me for a loop lol.

Never heard of this and would look at someone like they were crazy if they called my son "mama". It is definitely not part of MY culture.

Re: What's up with people calling baby boys...
I have mostly noticed that among spanish speaking people. I think it's just a term of endearment for a small child.

My italian grandmother used to call me "grandma". It's a cultural thing. Doesn't bother me.

Re: What's up with people calling baby boys...
I sometimes call my 10 month old "mama". It is a term of endearment. My mom called me and my brother "mommy" when we were very little. It's like saying the baby is mommy's love which is actually what i've hear my sis in law say "mommy love". I am Italian but I have no idea if this is an Italian thing. It in no way means that I am calling my son a female term. It's just affectionate. I have gotten weird looks saying it but I don't say it intentionally it just comes out! I find it kind of strange that people are taking such offense to what people call their own kids. It's a term used with love whether you get it or not. If a relative calls your kid something you don't like then tell them.

Re: What's up with people calling baby boys...
I always hated when people did this for both boys and girls... and then I had DD and started calling her that. I cant help it. DH yells at me when I do it but it just comes out And I'm Irish/German so that doesnt even explain it

I do... ...I think it's more of an affection/italian thing..lol..I call my daughter mamma nonna ..everyone laughs when I do..I swear I never call her by her name...,I know that is so bad...but she is just such a little mamma nonna to me.
I call my DS and DD "mamma and nonna" too. My mother (who my kids call nonna) calls them both " nonna"
ETA: it never phased me since I grew up being called "nonna"

Never heard of this before, but I really wouldn't like it if someone did that to DS.
Same here. I had enough of it this weekend when people kept asking if DS was a boy or a girl. He was wearing a blue striped button down shirt and khakis, if he was a girl he would have been in a dress! (We were at a party)

It's an Italian thing.....
In Italian you refer to the child whatever you are to them as a term of endearment.
I call my DS and DD "mamma" and my mom calls them "nonna." Aunts will call them "zia" and so forth....
It actually sounds cute in Italian.
