And you take a name, typically that of a saint that you admire, although it can be any name, as long as it is a saint name.

Re: What's your Confirmation name?
I looked it up in Wikipedia and got this
Confirmation name In many English-speaking countries and in German-speaking lands, as well as in Poland, it is customary for a person being confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church (and some Anglican dioceses) to adopt the name of a saint with whom he/she feels a special affinity, thus securing an additional patron saint to be his/her protector and guide. This practice is unknown in many other countries (including the Spanish and French-speaking ones and also Italy), and is not mentioned in the official liturgical book of the Rite of Confirmation. Obviously, the custom prevailing in a country influences, often decisively, the practice of immigrants from another country, even if they keep their own language. The saint's name is often used in conjunction with the confirmee's middle name, and is without effect in civil law, unless, of course, the confirmand pursues the appropriate legal avenues.

Ha! I remember going through a book & trying to find one I though sounded cool. We did have to right an essay about our chosen saint though.
I ended up with the generic Patricia-and it wasn't after St. Patrick- there was a St. Patricia who helped the poor or something. That's all I remember.

Actually for confirmation, I thought you it must use a saint's name. (Genevieve, my confirmation name IS a saint, though people ask me that all the time)
I know with Baptism, you USED to need to have your child baptized with a saint's name, but that is no longer necessary.
BTW - I picked St. Genevieve b/c the book said she was psychic, and I thought (in my infinite 13-year old wisdom) that was cool.

Confirmation is a sacrament where you receive the holy spirit in all its fullness (It is the third of seven sacraments)
To expand on that, it is when you become a full member of the church and renew the vows that were taken FOR you at your baptism by your godparents. As an adult, you now take the vows YOURSELF to become a full member of the church.

Which is confusing b/c pretty much NO ONE receives ALL seven sacraments... and actually, you should recive 3 sacraments before confirmation: baptism, reconciliation, and holy communion...

It is the 4th of the 7, you are correct. And when I was in school (Catholic of course), your confirmation name HAD to be a saint name, nothing else.
And I remember too writing an essay on my saint.....

Yeah, we did too--but you could opt to "renew" your middle name if it was a saint's name. And I did write the essay! I can't understand the point of a confirmation name NOT being a saint's name. Unless maybe it's the name of an important person in your life...
Anyway, mine's Patricia after St. Patrick.
