Re: Whats your Household income
FYI- For those of you whose "head" hurts.(I realized what I did wrong after the fact!!)
I answered the question that was asked in the title "what is your household income".
I didn't even see the title of the poll until after I answered. It dark on dark and hard to see.
So there are 3 things. People who answered the poll based on the title of the post, those who read the poll and answered correctly, and those who don't understand what "median means".

I was just wondering if the number is considering health insurance. If we deduct our annual health insurance(~14k) from our total we fall into a different bracket.
Again, your total household income is the money you make before taxes and without any of your bills, expenses, or debts taken into consideration. When someone asks what you make they don't care what you make after all (or some) of your expenses are taken out. It's simply what amount of money does your employer pay you on a yearly basis. That's it.

If you don't mind my asking how did you pay for school without loans if your family didnt help ?
I know lots of people that did this via scholarships, tuition assistance, work study, plain old working and paying for school as they went and attending state schools (SUNY of in other states) vs. private.
ETA: Whoa, screwed up the quoting on that one! [/QUOTE. I really think it depends on your field and if you just did undergrad or undergrad / grad. There are also strong barriers to entry in certain fields. If you want a six figure salary you often have to invest very large amounts in grad school. Law school/ business school , for example, is 150 k plus, medical school is 280 k. Many schools don't offer scholarships. Granted these people will command higher salaries , but if a couple each has over a 100 k in debt and is trying to buy real estate is in an extremely expensive area like the tri state it becomes next to impossible to live decently without hitting that 150 k mark ( unless you have financial assistance from family / live home for a long while )
DH and I both have grad degrees from private universities as well [/. Some grad schools give way more in scholarship money. I have a friend who is attending a top three business school. Total cost is 150 k. She will have a high loan payment when it is finished , but it is the only way to break into the industry she wants. Another friend nearly 300 k in debt after vet school. A neccesary investment to be a vet. Neither school offered scholarship money. So again, it depends on many factors, but if you crunch the numbers I think that there are certain life paths where you need to earn a high salary to live decency and an even higher one if you want to save / purchase a home UNLESS you Are helped by family.

1) I hope you all realize that my other post was a joke. Some of you answered me seriously
2) Regarding paying for school w/out loans or family help: as an undergrad I was lucky to have a scholarship, but for grad school I worked full time AND went to school full time and paid as I went.
3) I have 4 cats.

Posted by MrsA1012 If you don't mind my asking how did you pay for school without loans if your family didnt help ? Did you guys live at home until you got married ? Borrow against a 401 k or pension. I'm genuinely curious because I don't see how this kind of life is possible making less than a certain amount.
i had scholarships in undergrad with the exception of the last year. i worked full time during grad school. i paid it off in my 20's and once i got my most recent promotion and retro pay, was able to pay it off in full. dh had a full ride grad and undergrad. we thankfully have been debt free for years.

Whats your Household income
DH and I both went to public universities. He has a small loan, but nothing compared to what it would have been if he went private.
We also bought our home without any help (or borrowing from retirement) and lived on our own long before we got married.
Throwing anonymity out the window, we make above the top bracket in the poll and it's still hard. And we don't have kids. We're certainly not poor, but we do not live extravagantly by any means. LI is expensive.

Whats your Household income
I think working through grad school is an amazing option if your program is reasonably priced/ you make a good salary and you can do it and still excel academically. There are some grad degrees where you really can't work and do well. Also, now a days some programs are so expensive that unless you make a great salary You arent going to put a big dent in the cost. For example ,dh worked full time while attending a top grad program, but at 50 k a year he could not: afford to pay much of the tuition and still pay his other expenses.

Whats your Household income
I really wonder how some people make it on Long Island. Basic expenses alone are ridiculous.

It really is not easy unless you're pulling in 6 figure salaries. Even then, some in those shoes wouldn't call it easy. It's especially hard trying to raise a family...

I agree. Another huge issue is childcare. If you have a HHI of 150k within 2 working parents, it's very difficult with kids. That same income with a stay at home parent will take you much further since there are no childcare costs

exactly. we make over $150k but next year we will be paying almost $20k in childcare alone (and can only max out at 5k for flex spending and can't claim the rest bc we make "too much money" but thats another thread

We make above the top bracket and my husband drives a 12 year old Hyundai. I have an 8 year old Honda. Bmws aren't even on the radar It's really not as much as it seems, you get killed with taxes. And we pay 16k a year in childcare for one kid and "make too much" for the child tax credit.

I know what mean, median and mode are, but for some reason I messed up the definition of median, so I was that person. I'm not sure what I was thinking, and last night I realized what I wrote

We have always made it on a lot less, with 2 kids. It all depends on your lifestyle and how much you feel you need to keep up with the Joneses.

So did we! I think the bracket of student loan interest is way too low.

Re: Whats your Household income
This thread really annoys me. Reading about how people make over $150k and have a hard time making it work on Long Island is absurd. If you choose to live within your means, there are no issues living here on that amount of money. Actually, if you live within your means, you can make it by on much less.

I have to agree. We live on half of that on LI and own a home, have 2 cars, 2 kids and pay our bills on time.

We make above the highest bracket on this page and we had one car up until a month ago and my boots have a hole in them so my feet get wet everytime it rains.
