I don't understand why we need to know what other ppl earn.
Need to know if we are all in the " everything is too expensive here" boat

But we still don't since it is a poll. It was just to see if LIF is a true representation of LI. Just to see if the Med here is the med on LI

I'm with you on this.
At least you can take solace in that, chance are, the people you're throwing things at probably have a HHI over $150K.

I think that all depends on your lifestyle. Many people live way under that amount and pay all their bills on time, save some money and do things.

I don't think this is true at all. I think it is completely manageable to live on less, and do well.
DH and I bought our house (in a good neighborhood) with no help, had no parental assistance for college, and we make less than this. We're able to save, we got married and had a baby since buying our house. We've made home improvements and we travel. Are we rich? No, but we are absolutely doing more than just "making it", and with no debt other than a small student loan and our mortgage.

I was just wondering if the number is considering health insurance. If we deduct our annual health insurance(~14k) from our total we fall into a different bracket.
Again, your total household income is the money you make before taxes and without any of your bills, expenses, or debts taken into consideration. When someone asks what you make they don't care what you make after all (or some) of your expenses are taken out. It's simply what amount of money does your employer pay you on a yearly basis. That's it.

Exactly. It's your salary. When you got the job and they said- this job is paying $50k per year. That's it.

Your household is comprised of the people who live in your home. Your household income is the total amount of money brought in from all of the income earners that reside in the home.
So, your total household income is how much money is coming into YOUR house, from all possible income sources...............salary, alimony, rental properties, etc. What is the TOTAL amount of money your household brings in???
Example. If your DH makes $50k, you make $20K, and you bring in another $10K from say a house you're renting out then your TOTAL HOUSEHOLD INCOME is $80K which, for the purposes of the stat mentioned in the original post, would put you BELOW the median HHI of $93K/yr.

If you don't mind my asking how did you pay for school without loans if your family didnt help ? Did you guys live at home until you got married ? Borrow against a 401 k or pension. I'm genuinely curious because I don't see how this kind of life is possible making less than a certain amount.

I know lots of people that did this via scholarships, tuition assistance, work study, plain old working and paying for school as they went and attending state schools (SUNY of in other states) vs. private.
ETA: Whoa, screwed up the quoting on that one!

I had a scholarship, DH did too but he took out some loans, about 2/3 of which have been repaid (he's 30, I'm 28 and we bought our house 3 years ago). We also both went to private universities. We lived at home until be bought our house, but apart from paying rent we've both been financially independent since we started working in high school.
We took out a small 401k loan (10k) when we bought our house, and that money hasn't been spent (we wanted a cushion), it's also been mostly repaid.
We don't go out often because i prefer my cooking to take out or chain restaurants. We don't have a lawn person or cleaning lady, DH and I do it ourselves. We prioritize what's important to us. We bought a house we could actually afford, rather than stretching ourselves.

Maybe you could let your house be a staging location for a show, and then the house will earn money and you could be all like "THAT'S RIGHT, HOUSE...EARN YOUR KEEP MOFO!!!!" $+-$%$<*/$!!!!!!!

ETA: Whoa, screwed up the quoting on that one! [/QUOTE. I really think it depends on your field and if you just did undergrad or undergrad / grad. There are also strong barriers to entry in certain fields. If you want a six figure salary you often have to invest very large amounts in grad school. Law school/ business school , for example, is 150 k plus, medical school is 280 k. Many schools don't offer scholarships. Granted these people will command higher salaries , but if a couple each has over a 100 k in debt and is trying to buy real estate is in an extremely expensive area like the tri state it becomes next to impossible to live decently without hitting that 150 k mark ( unless you have financial assistance from family / live home for a long while )

That's awesome that you were able to manage finances so well, sounds like living at home, careful planning and scholarships were really helpful for you guys.
