Re: when do you draw the line and leave no tip at all?

What condition were your feet? Did you want attention to your cuticles or callous?

When I lived in Manhattan, I wanted to be in and out. I don't like my cuticles cut and want them pushed back. My nails were always well maintained so I didn't need much work. I used to get irritated if I got a slow girl, especially if I went during lunch. This was more of a polish change. I did not get a massage. It didn't feel like pampering.

I now go to a nicer spa to get my mani/pedis. I spend $50 per mani/pedi vs $25 that I used to pay at my quicker place. My current place has much better service and facilities. I always use the same 2 people and tip them well. For the double price that I now pay, the basic mani/pedi comes with a foot massage. They also offer multiple levels of feet pampering for extra $.

eta: even if I get super bad service, I tip 10%. I think 10% is a horrible tip, equivalent of an insult.

Re: when do you draw the line and leave no tip at all?

I've only not left a tip once in my life. We were at a restaurant....and it was busy....but we barely received any service at all. It took forever to seat us, forever to bring us menus, forever to take our order, get us drinks...pretty much everything. The people were rude and never once apologized or explained why everything was taking so long. The orders were wrong, no corrections were made. It was a miserable dining experience.....so we left the exact amount for the bill and ran out because we felt weird not leaving a tip.....but I was not about to reward that kind of service.

I'm usually a very generous tipper....my husband hates it...but if someone does a great job, I love to thank them for it.

um... the cheap(under 20 bucks) asian places I have gone to... they massage my feet and up my calf, my feet soak in the bubble jets, they sand away... ontop of the regular nail painting.. and when they put me under the foot dryer I usually get a one minute back rub too...

yeah I would have been pssed.

We once left no tip... friendlies... extra slow, big red lipstick stains on glass of clear sprite... hair in food... i think we never went back to that location after that, unless meeting family on rare occasion.

to answer the question as to what i should have been expecting for my money: i got the "spa" pedicure, which promised a massage and scrubbing.

when i told the owner, he looked at me like i had two heads and was speaking martian.

Under these circumstances, I would have said something during it. If I didn't get a spa pedicure, I wouldn't have paid for it. I would have asked for someone else. If I wasn't comfortable speaking up, I definitely wouldn't have tipped (and I can't think of anytime I haven't tipped.).

Becoming upset over it & then not tipping stil means you paid for something you didn't get.

You need a do-over on that pedicure!Chat Icon

For bad service, I tip 10%. There have many times where I didn't want to leave a tip at restaurants, nail salons, and hair salons but I was never brave enough to not to leave a tip. I am glad you didn't leave a tip:) Someone has to do that so they know the service sucked and won't try to do it again.

Re: when do you draw the line and leave no tip at all?

I pay about $15 for a pedicure and they file, buff my heels and take care of the cuticle. They don't massage. If I have more time I'll get a spa pedicure and they massage the feet and calves.

As for when I wouldn't tip, there was only one time I didn't tip. It was at a restaurant. The waiter was horrible. I asked for honey for my tea and he said "no." He spilled a drink all over my friend and didn't apologize or bring her napkins to wipe herself off and then brought us the wrong food and when I pointed it out he yelled "don't touch that!!" and grabbed the plates off the table and walked away with them.
