When you stay at a hotel, do you leave a tip for the maid?
Whether it's for a single night or a few nights? What are your thoughts ?

Yeah, sometimes it's harder to distinguish between when you should tip and it's expected vs. when it's just a nice gesture for exceptional service.
I figure this poll would settle a debate for me.

So for two nights for my DH and I =$4

I travel a lot for work and I actually don't have my room cleaned, so I don't leave a tip. I get a few extra towels and there is no reason I need someone making the bed or doing anything else. I feel more secure this way when I am traveling on my own.
When I go away on vacation with my Dh we always have maid service so we usually tip...the only time we don't is when we forget.

$2-3 per day usually.
And I leave the tip money out daily. I don't just pool the total at the end because you may get different people cleaning on different days.

No I don't. I mean come on now, we are paying to sleep in the room and use it, so part of that business is to have someone clean it.

I am not big on tipping anyone and everyone--believe me--but I think these are people that should always be tipped.
What is minimum wage--$7.25? So if they get paid min wage, and they clean 2 rooms per hour, they're getting $3.63 per room. Granted some people leave them very little to do but other people are totally disgusting. And regardless, the still have to scrub every toilet, every shower, change your used sheets, etc. I see no harm in giving them $2/night for providing this service.

I always tip, but not much $$- like $5-$10. Except on our cruise. That room is destroyed after a week.

I always tip daily, usually about $5, I don't wait until the end of the trip because there could be different people that clean the room.

My best friend's mom is a maid at a really nice hotel in Boston (she has been working there for years and years, ever since I met my BFF). She always told me the same as others said - $2 pp per night. And that it's always nice to leave a few dollars every day instead of just on the day you leave, since the staff rotates every day.
Sometimes I only leave a tip on the day I leave since I'm the type who actually straightens up the room every day and rehangs all the towels and the like. I just always try to think of my best friend's mom and how hard she works and at least leave something, even if it's only a few dollars a day.

I always tip. Its hard work to clean so many rooms in one day. I've had family members who do this for a living and see how tired they are at the end of their work day. I guess its a soft spot for me. I never even leave the room messy but always tip $3-5 per day

I always tip. The last hotel we stayed in, I struck up a conversation with the maid and it's ridiculous how little they get paid for the amount of work they do!! They rely on those tips the same way waitresses do.

It really depends, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. We mostly travel with our timeshare and I don't tip because we don't have daily service. They just clean the unit at the end of the week and set it up for the next person. And we do most of the work- we leave all of the dishes cleaned, make a pile of the towels and sheets, and throw out all of the garbage. All they have to come in a do is vacuum and make the beds- and we pay a lot of money in yearly maintenance that I think that's covered. When we travel out of the country, to like Mexico or DR, I not only tip a couple dollars daily, but I tend to bring little gifts from the dollar store too ( litttle toys, hair clips, coloring books and crayons, etc...)
