When do you plan to switch DC from a car seat to a booster?
We have to buy some new car seats and I just realized that kids can switch to a booster at age 4. 4yo DS is going to stay in his car seat for probably at least another year. Just wondering when others plan to switch.

DS switched on his 6th b-day. DD is almost 7, and we have no immediate plans to switch her. Probably when she's about 7.5 or so. She's small for her age, though. A booster isn't as safe as a car seat, so we're in no rush to move up.

My DD was almost finished with Kindergarten when I switched her (she was 6 and a small 6 at that.) She was in the boostee until she was 9.
By law they are allowed to switch at the minimum of 4 years and 40 pounds. Safety wise they are safer in a harness for as long as possible. My DS'S seat goes to 65 pounds with the harness. I plan on trying to maximize its use for as long as I can (he is 2.5 years old and about 35the pounds)

are the requirements 4 years AND 40 lbs or one of those? Also, what about height?
DS is only 2 1/2 but he's already 40lbs and tall for his age. I believe his carseat is also good until 65lbs, and the converts to booster? but it's so uncomfortable i can't imagine having to use it until 4 let alone 6!

Re: When do you plan to switch DC from a car seat to a booster?
They recommend using a booster until 8 years and 80 pounds. The safest is a five point harness until they outgrow the weight limit for that. My sons seat harnesses up to 65 pounds. I plan on keeping him in it until that weight. Get a Graco Nautilus.. It will last him until 100 lbs...

Re: When do you plan to switch DC from a car seat to a booster?
A child under age four who weighs more than 40 pounds may be restrained in a booster seat with a lap and shoulder belt. A child of age 4, 5, 6 or 7, must use a booster seat with lap and shoulder belt or a child safety seat (The child and safety restraint system must meet the height and weight recommendations of the restraint manufacturer.)

NYS laws are outdated.
AAP and NHTSA recommend keeping a child in a harness as long as you can, preferably until around age 6/7
They also recommend keeping your child in a belt positioning booster until they are able to pass the 5 step test, which usually happens when they reach about 4'9" tall.
DD1 is in a 5 pt harness still, will be for a while, but for emergencies we have begun booster training her on short trips to school (less than 5 minutes away on side streets) . We decided to do this in case something ever happened and we weren't able to get her and a peer's parent had to transport her home (majority of her classmates are in boosters now, next year is Kindy and we anticipate she will be one of only a few still in a harness)

Re: When do you plan to switch DC from a car seat to a booster?
Hmmm, I've been thinking about this. DS is 3.5, 38 lbs and 40 inches. I *think* about switching him to a booster, the ones with the high back and a 5-point harness in about 1 year, but only bc DC2 will be here in the summer and I figure that child will move into DS' car seat once he is about 10 months making DS1 4yr 8mos when he moves to something else. BUT, reading these responses now I'm not so sure. Think I will have to research it more once the time comes. I can always just but DC2 a new car seat and keep DS1 in his longer.

My girls are 5.5(44 inches and 46lbs) and 6.5 years old(47 inches and 48lbs) and are still in 5 point harnesses. That will not be changing anytime soon.

No time in the near future. They are 3 and 4. When we do get a booster, I think there are some that still have 5 point harness options. I will use that as long as I can.

Re: When do you plan to switch DC from a car seat to a booster?
We just bought my 3.5 year old the Britax Frontier 85 SICT which is a five point harness booster. My DS is extremely tall & outbreak his older marathon. I will keep him in 5 point harness as long as I can.

Re: When do you plan to switch DC from a car seat to a booster?
DS is 6 (turning 7 in November) and he is still in a car seat. This care seat actually turns into a booster seat. He is doing fine with it for now and we feel that its the safest.
