When do you think schools will reopen?
I saw an article that the mayor of some small town in upstate NY is concerned that even though his town has only had 30 positive cases, they will never meet the ridiculous benchmarks that Cuomo has put out. I quote "If my little town in Rensselaer county is worried about ever meeting all 7, do places like NYC & LI stand a channce?" It is terrifying. I am starting to hope people revolt. Because schools opening in September? At this rate we will not have reached stage 1 by September! And Cuomo doesn't care!

Is there anyone who thinks even the best form of distance learning can replace an actual classroom? I am not being snarky, I am actually open to hearing other's opinions. After hearing Cuomo's conference yesterday, I spent the rest of the day completely sick with anxiety. It sounds like if he can get away with distance learning for all of the 2020-21 academic year, he will do it. And he is trying to brainwash parents into thinking it will be fine if he does that. My kids school is doing a phenomenal job, they have been since March. But even in the absolute best scenario, this is not an adequate education. I would love to see the other side of it. Perhaps I am missing something.
We have a charter school (my kids don’t go there) and at the charter school they have a full day of zoom learning. 9am -3pm with a lunch break. They have to ask for a bathroom break etc. everything’s done the same as if they were in actual school. Even in this case, best case scenario, I think it is an unreasonable expectation. There are too many distractions at home...
I'm not a teacher and not a parent, but it seems like this way of doing "remote learning" would be so much better than what I am hearing about. I realize it could be very difficult for parents who are working from home to make sure their child is paying attention etc, but it also seems like it might make parent's lives easier in some ways too. It would definitely provide some structure and engagement between students and teachers
This also doesn’t work for middle school / High school. They have different teachers for different subjects.
My son has to switch between different zoom and google hangout meetings. He already was marked absent this week for not attending Science class. Technically he cut class and I am home with him. He has organization issues which he was suppose to get help with, that was cancelled indefinitely. This will not work for all children.
I think it will work for middle school and high school students, but not young children. It works for those that just got out of high school for me. They have a half hour between classes, and the school has to organize one platform for everybody to use. Just because they switch classes doesn't make it more difficult, IMO.
As for your son getting marked absent is a bit too strict. There definitely should be some slack for that now. I don't understand why they cancelled his help for organization? This is the perfect time for him to learn more about this.
Like it or not, I definitely see this changing technology in the future and now is a good time to get that skill. But they still need to improve things such as internet connection, security, etc.
It definitely is not a complete replacement for school, though.

It is absolutely crucial on a number of levels that schools open in September. We have 4 months. Make a plan and get it done. Honestly the longer they stay closed, the less chance there is of them ever opening again like anything close to normal.

Well it’s easy for you to hypothetically say it works but my son is in middle school and it’s barely working. I’m living in it right now, so it’s easy to say a blind statement that middle school wouldnt be that difficult to navigate, but that is not true. I find it strange that I am giving you my personal experience that I am living with now and yet you still disregard them. You can’t say middle school won’t be that bad when I am seeing it for my own eyes. Not every kid has the maturity level to work remote. Sh!t not every adult can handle working remote with out distractions.
And yes the meeting to get him extra services was cancelled. This is the impact of the shut down. We were suppose have an in person meeting a week after schools closed with a Social worker. They then moved it to zoom and then that’s was cancelled. With no expectations of when they would start holding meetings again. There are children who are getting ignored, contrary to what everyone wants to believe.

I get that they need a plan and need to get it done, but I think that is *impossible* to do right now. We just simply don't know what to do. If you don't know, then there is nothing you can do, as frustrating as that sounds.
Experts have been warning about this for years. Governments kind of ignored it. It's like going in to give a speech and not preparing. You wing it, and sometimes it works, and other times it doesn't. I think politicians are just in the 'stage fright' phase of that speech. Hopefully it will get better in a few months' time after we have some examples to follow.

I wouldn't say I'm disregarding your experience. I just personally haven't experienced it yet. Regular school doesn't work for some people, regular jobs don't work for some people, etc. You get the point. There is no standard and no one knows what to do right now. But one thing is for sure, life will never be the same after this.

I am not an expert in education or the medical field but I think saying that it is impossible because no one knows what to do is inexcusable. Figure it out. There are ways to figure this stuff out if you are a so called expert in your field. Come up with some guidelines, formulate a plan. It might not be perfect and it might have some kinks to work out but it has to be better than what is going on right now. All I am seeing is people who love to hear themselves talk. If Cuomo spent more time coming up with a plan than preparing these ridiculous hours long updates day after day after day perhaps we would already have a plan.

I get the anger and the outrage but the reality is we are all in same boat. I have friends/family in places like Ohio, PA, NC, Kentucky. They are all talking some kind of preparedness for distance learning, A&B days etc. no one knows what’s going to happen. A second wave is predicted and there better be a plan in place to make a better distance learning program that’s more uniform and structured than what is going on now. I think that’s why Bill Gates is involved. If this whole thing goes south and Cuomo just sat there and did nothing there would be equal outrage. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I don’t envy him right now!

It's impossible right now. You just need to give it time. Serious situations take a while to work out. I also think keeping the public informed is a part of the plan. They just need to do it correctly, and we have to be patient. If you think about past horrific events in the last century, things needed time to get better. They just aren't at that point yet. I definitely think they will get something together by September. There is nothing we can do to change that part.

I wish people would stop saying this. We are not all in this together and we are certainly not all in the same boat. Maybe the same ocean but the not same boat.
Some are in yachts, some in sailboats, some in kayaks others on sinking rafts. Why can’t we be realistic all the way around? I’m so confused by this.
And this is speaking from a person who is fortunate during this situation.

You clearly take this quote out of context when you delete part of it and don't quote the whole thing. We are all in the same boat regarding the situation of schools. I dont know of anywhere in the nation right now where schools are planning to reopen prior to the next academic year. Am I wrong?

I think at this point we have all moved on from this academic year. We know it's over. People are now worried about September. Which is a very real concern, and there is zero excuse to not have some kind of plan in place to get kids back in the buildings 4 months from now.

I only deleted some of it because I just want to address that analogy. I see what you are saying, in terms of schools being closed though out the US. Tri-state area. Being closed for the rest of year is not different than the rest of the country. I misunderstood and do agree with you on how your analogy was used. sorry about that.
However, I don’t think this area is nearly the same in comparison to other states, for example like Kentucky. I also don’t believe all children are the same and there is no way they can create a solid distance learning plan for our children in this area by September. Personally my son will suffer tremendously and this will set him back a year. I will start thinking of other ways for his education if the current system is going to remain in September.
I have family in other states and the government in those states are not talking about moving to remote learning or the close of the next school year. However, Cuomo seems to be promising it. Again my opinion from his briefings.

Thanks, that’s all I’m saying. I’m over this year, I expected it and not surprised by it. But by September this would be total horse sh!t. And that’s my professional thoughts on this

I agree wholeheartedly with that. My son is in Pre-k and has had special ed services and OT this year. The lack of socialization is detrimental for sure. All I can do at this point is be thankful his issues are not worse. I have a friend who's son is severely autistic and very limited in his verbal abilities and is regressing. It's an absolute nightmare. And I agree We are definitely in worse shape than places Kentucky. I fear that we wont be able to get this under control before September because of the outrage and blatant disregard for social distancing. I'm not the biggest fan of Cuomo or Gates but I dont think theres anything wrong with being prepared for the worst...

When do you think schools will reopen?
If we are still crisis schooling in September, I’m going to have a meltdown.
My son needs socialization. I don’t care about actual learning. I can teach him reading, writing, math. He’s an only child and hasn’t interacted with another kid in over 8 weeks. Also - he had a 5 minute meltdown since he had to write one sentence. Pretty sure he doesn’t exhibit those behaviors at school.
I teach HS science. How can kids adequately learn science at home with no chemicals, microscopes, etc? Sure, I can “teach” science, but kids need to do science. There are some easy home things I can do, but those are elementary level type activities.
We need a plan. My district is working on one now for next year.
I live in one of those medium sized upstate communities that a PP mentioned. Lots of areas near me meet the criteria, but since we’re lumped in with Albany County, we are going to have a hard time ever getting to Stage 1.

It sure can if they really try hard enough. If that distance learning is somehow able to materialize a hologram teacher. And then some hologram classmates to socialise with and a hologram classroom with hologram hands on activities that don't involve a computer screen and a keyboard as a manipulative.

I fear that we wont be able to get this under control before September because of the outrage and blatant disregard for social distancing. I'm not the biggest fan of Cuomo or Gates but I dont think theres anything wrong with being prepared for the worst... .
We have to start moving away form that mentality...”oh ppl are not wearing masks or social distancing”. Ppl already are gathering and not always using masks, it’s being happening since the beginning actually and the numbers are coming down so obviously is not because of the stupid rules Cuomo has tried to implement. That’s not how viruses work.

I have a high schooler who finds this so much harder. On top of that, I don’t have a degree in any of these subjects so how am I supposed to teach? It goes way beyond learning too. The aspect of going to school, the independence, the socialization. Children are raised by a village even though you disagree and think us parents should be responsible for everything.

It's a horrible idea, period end of story. Children and even High School students are not meant to sit in front of a fuking screen all day long with no human interaction. It's TERRIBLE for them. It will raise a generation of sociopaths. School has been this way since the beginning of time for a reason. Enough is enough with this nonsense. This is not a long term solution to education by a long shot.

It sure can if they really try hard enough. If that distance learning is somehow able to materialize a hologram teacher. And then some hologram classmates to socialise with and a hologram classroom with hologram hands on activities that don't involve a computer screen and a keyboard as a manipulative.
I needed that

Re: When do you think schools will reopen?
I don't even mind turning the kitchen into a school cafeteria and putting out some extra chairs at the kitchen table for the hologram classmates
I'm sorry, but the whole thing is ridiculous. All you hear from medical experts is how detrimental screens are for children and their still developing brains, so sure let's put them all in front of one for endless hours a week and let's traumatize them by yelling and threatening to write a sentence or read a paragraph when they don't behave this way in a REAL classroom with a REAL teacher. It's all nonsense. Schools had to close and move online as an EMERGENCY. This was never meant to be permanent. Fine, this school year was a wash. But, they all better have real concrete plans for how to handle next school year come September that doesn't involve a computer screen. They have more than enough time to come up with one.

You are killing me, my DH is asking why am I cracking up so hard. :
But agree with everything you said too. It’s astounding how many people aren't questioning or wondering about these aspects.
