Re: When was your DC off bottles completely?

I wanted that too but it didnt happen. DD is 14 months and we are working on it but she refuses milk from her sippy...I know I need to get tough and do it but I just cant bring myself to not give her milk!

My advice, try giving them formula now in their sippy!!!

My first was off at 12 months, 2nd at 11 months and my last also at 11 months. The earlier the better! The longer you wait the harder it is to make the change from bottle to cup.

Re: When was your DC off bottles completely?

I think it's fine as long as they are drinking well from a sippy cup - Luca was off bottles by 13 months, and since DD is my last Chat Icon I'm not rushing it, but I think once we are done with this last box of liners that will be it too.

agree...if they will take it from a sippy cup/straw cup.. fine.. John just started taking milk from his cup.. he only takes morning and night bottle.. but it's for mommy more than John at this point. Chat Icon

17 months old - we went cold turkey with DD. I don't understand why everyone is in such a rush to ditch the bottle. I really didn't care when she dropped them, ultimately I made her stop because I was tired of cleaning them. Chat Icon

I know someone else who did this, if you think about it, the spout sippy cups are really no different than bottles, and I know a lot of kids who can use straw sippies around 6 months or so...

you're right but I dont' think it would have too much of an affect if they stayed on them past one.. I think if they fall asleep with it..it's an issue but dr.s used to say 2 years old for bottles.. my dr. still does.Chat Icon

Re: When was your DC off bottles completely?

My goal was to have DS completely off bottles by 12 months. So at 11 months I tried a few different sippy cups. Once he tried the Playtex sippy, he really just "got" it and within 2 days I just stopped using bottles since he was fine with the sippy cup.

So at just over 11 months, he was solely on sippy cups. He was still drinking formula then.

At 12 months, he started drinking regular milk in his sippy and didn't have any issue with the transition (thankfully).

I agree that the earlier, the easier it is since they don't become as attached. Also I think they notice changes more when they're older.

To be honest, it was because I loathed cleaning those Dr. Brown's bottles.. I tried it and she took it and neither of us ever looked back.. Then when DD#2 came, i did the same. then we went to straw sippies and then plain water bottles that you put the tops out of.. now we use the contigo cups if we are out, otherwise, they use regular cups

Re: When was your DC off bottles completely?

My ped wanted them gone at 15 months. DS was off around 18/19 months. At his 19 month appt she asked I said no he was still on them and she said okay, the longer he is on them the more $$ the dentist bills. And as I have had bad teeth, I started the transition that day.

However I am glad I waited because his milk consumption dropped dramatically. He just had no desire to take regular milk from a sippy. He would rather not drink anything!

ETA: I also waited bc at 12 months DS was SUPER attached to his bottle. He never took a paci so the bottle was his comfort item. He looked for it when he was tired, crabby, etc. By 18 months I just took 1 bottle away a week and he never even questioned it.

agreed.. so long as they don't have it in their mouths NONSTOP, it shouldn't affect their teeth.. Chat Icon

This is my fear....why I would rather her have a bottle than drink no milk. Chat Icon

12 months for both kids. DS did drop his milk intake, but DD did not. DS still does not love milk, but he likes yogurt and cheese.

If they use the straw without a problem Id say keep them on the straw.. better for speech and tounge position and things like that!!

Re: When was your DC off bottles completely?

DS started drinking from a sippy at 7-8 months but he would only take sips here & there throughout the day. He dropped all bottles by 11 months except for the night bottle b/c that's when I can get 8oz into him at one shot. I have no plans of getting rid of it yet. He's almost 14 months & I'll wait to see what his Dr says at our 15 month appt.

DS doesn't quite "get" the straw sippy so we use these:

If your boys take the straw sippies, stick with those as they are said to be better for their mouth's development etc. I'm going to start trying the straw sippy some time soon.

Also, DS' milk consumption didn't go down because of the sippy. He does drink a few ounces less per day of regular milk than he used to drink of formula, but he's also eating more food now, and the ped said it's natural for that to happen.

thanks Yesi

ok yea my Ped said the same thing with the consumption of milk.
he also said how important it is now to get their vitamins.. so i am on top of that!

i will try harder with the straw sippy.. joey "knows" how to do it.. he just wants no part of it.. dylan is much better.
i will see what i can do.
thanks for your help!

Re: When was your DC off bottles completely?

On dd 1st bday I gave her a sippy and we haven't looked back. I had to change her sippy from the playtex with hard spout to pampers or nuby with soft spout. I really only had her use a sippy a few times before that.
Because we use a soft spout I think it reminds her of a bottle nipple.
