When you switched to a toddler bed or twin for the first time...UPDATED
How long did it take for the newness of your DC being able to get in and out of bed themselves to wear off? We took down the side of the crib 2 weeks ago and it's been toddler bed now. He goes to bed fine--maybe only pops his head out once. But the mornings are not going so well. I guess he used to wake up and then roll over and go back to sleep. When he used to wake up at 7-7:30, he's now getting up at 5am and popping out of bed and running down the hall "Hi Mommy!!!!". I tried so hard this morning to get him to go back down, but he was wide awake. Please tell me this is just a phase and will wear off eventually and he'll go back to his old sleeping habits. If not, that crib side might be going back on!
UPDATE: So, he got up at 1am, 3:30am and 5:30am last night. He's such a little stinker too. He opens the door a crack (I can hear him turnt he handle) and stands there for a few minutes peaking out like he's making sure he's not gonna get busted. Then I hear the patter of feet running downt he hallway and, "Hi Daddy!" (DH was on the couch).
WHEN WILL IT END??????

This is exactly my fear of converting it to a bed. At this rate Jack will be 10 before I make the switch!
No advice but would love to see if anyone has any!

I am curious about this as well - thanks for posting. DD is trying to climb out at 3am so the crib is being converted to her toddler bed this week and I'm worried about the adjustment period

I haven't attempted this yet, but I just had to because I can totally see him running down the hall yelling, "Hi Mommy."

Re: When you switched to a toddler bed or twin for the first time...
Honestly, it only took a couple of days. The first couple nights DD attempted to get up, but we put her right back in her bed. We used Supernanny's back to bed technique and it really worked for her. The first time she got up, we put her back said it's nighttime, said goodnight etc. The second time and so on, said nothing just put her back. She learned quickly that getting up wasn't a good idea.

Sorry - no experience with this but I was just telling DH that we are keeping Lucas in the crib longer...I'm thinking into Fall...by then we can have his big boy room ready...so we have to not only transition to a new bed but a new room

Re: When you switched to a toddler bed or twin for the first time...
my daughter's room door is shut so she cannot just get out of the room. When we first transitioned her, the first night was tough but then she did great
about a montha fter the transition, she went through a 3 week phase where she cried atthe door EVERY night and slept on the floor
Now, she is back in her bad and happy as a clam, no problems at all, once again, her door is shut but even in the morning, I find her sitting up in her bed playing with toys, talking, etc

I'm not worried about him coming out of his room. I need him to sleep!!!! Even if he was locked into his room, he'd still be up, playing and making a racket. Before we turned it into a toddle bed, he ALWAYS slept through the night with NO problems from 9pm -7/7:30am. Now he's getting cranky during the day and taking poor naps cause he keeps getting up. Even if he's in his room, my room is next to it and if he's not sleeping, I'm not sleeping--which means cranky, unproductive mommy!

I'm so sorry I don't have advice because we haven't attempted the switch to Toddler Bed yet, but I SO feel your pain. I'm sorry you and DS are having trouble transitioning. I am worried about the same thing happening when we transition Thomas. He's a very good sleeper now, but given the freedom to get out of a bed.... I don't have high hopes for an easy transition...

Re: When you switched to a toddler bed or twin for the first time...UPDATED
I copied this from an article on Baby Center. HTH.
Some toddlers simply aren't ready for a bed. It takes a certain amount of cognitive development for your child to understand that a bed has imaginary boundaries that he must stay within. If you find that your great sleeper all of a sudden takes a long time to fall asleep at night, gets out of bed many times or wanders around the house, he's probably not ready for his own bed. As with potty-training, sometimes it's worth taking a step back and bringing back the diapers — or in this case, the crib — and trying again later. Just be sure you don't present the reappearance of the crib as a step backward in development or a punishment.

Re: When you switched to a toddler bed or twin for the first time...UPDATED
I have DD's bed against the wall with a large side rail on the other side so while it's not impossible to get out of the bed it is somewhat confining and she usually stays in there till I get her. The only time she gets up and finds me is if she has had a bad dream or not feeling well.

My son never gets out of his bed, and he is 3...it took him MONTHS to realise he could get out of bed in the mornings! Months!
