When Your DC Started Solids

did DC stool become hard? Did DC sometimes strain to pass stool? If yes, what did you gave your DC to relieve he/she of being constipated?

I started Ella on solids on Sunday and I noticed that her stool is hard and she is straining to pass her stool. She never was like this until she started solids.

What should I do?

You can try giving her some water to loosen it up but once you start the fruit and veggies it will be easier for her to go. If you did rice first and felt it was too binding then I would go to oatmeal and barely. Once you have the fruit and veggies then mix in the rice cereal.

Thanks Seles!Chat Icon Yes, I started her with the Organic Whole grain Cereal. I will start to mix it in her fruits and veggies. DD drink alot of water so I know that is not the issue. I am thinking it is the rice Cereal.

Do I mix the cereal first with some formula and then add it to the fruits or veggies or do I just put the cereal just as is into the fruits and veggies?

DD's never got hard (at least so far - it's only been 2 weeks!). Everyone told me rice would make her constipated, but it had the opposite effect.

I asked the ped about constipation so I could be prepared and he said to give her a couple ounces of prune juice diluted with water.

Yes. it sounds pretty normal to me. the rice sometimes binds them. I usually gave my kids a little grape juice and that jarred things up for them! lol

You can also try and switch it up to oatmeal or barley and see if that does the trick. But I know that for my kids, once I started them on the solids, their poop just evolved! lol

The poop will evolve into something different now. As baby eats more solids, poop becomes more solid. Look out for fussiness and if the baby is in pain. It's not uncommon to skip poops or have them hard since their digestive system is working all this new stuff. I suggest prune/water mix or feed prunes for breakfast with her cereal. Prunes are a godsend.

Re: When Your DC Started Solids

maybe also try some prunes as a fruit?

I dunno, I haven't started solids yet, but bought some prunes in case the "need" presented itself! Chat Icon

I mix the cereal like you are doing now and then once mixed add the fruit or veggie. You can also seperate but it just gets time consuming Chat Icon . Also when you start to feed her the solids you will notice a change in color. It will be some fall color.
