I know this is a hot topic around here, but where did everyone get their dogs from??

We rescued my dog from Islip Animal Shelter.

2 from NSAL & 1 from a shelter in FL

Never bought dogs from a store and never will.

One is from North Shore Animal League. The other was abandoned at Forest Park and we took her in.

I love what they do at North Shore, but I'd also be wary. The staff consists of a lot of volunteers (which is wonderful!) who are not all that knowledgeable about dog breeds (which is dangerous!).

Many years ago when I was a teenager, NSAL adopted a Chow mix to our family of 5. When we went to adopt, all 5 of us were there- including my very young brother and sister (maybe 5 or 6 at the time?). We asked the NSAL worker about her and her temperment and if she'd make a good family dog and the worker responded with an emphatic "absolutely!" The dog had a purple tongue- the most blatant and obvious trait that a dog breed can pretty much have. Chows are notoriously NOT good with children. We didn't know any of these things at the time. We didn't take the time to educate ourselves before we went to North Shore. After my brother and sister were BOTH bitten on the face by the Chow, we vowed never to make that mistake again. We eventually had to give up the Chow to a breed specific rescue as NSAL refused to take the dog back period.

I don't say these things to dissuade you from adopting from NSAL, but I think it's important to know. Since that incident, I've adopted my dog, a collie/retriever mix from NSAL and had no issues. They have the best intentions, but they can't afford to really train their staff the way they should be trained. So I made it a point to educate myself before going to adopt my pup. I couldn't be happier, he's one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I will absolutely adopt from NSAL again.

ETA: And I would never, ever a in hundred, million years buy a puppy from a pet store. Ever.

ETAA: I don't have any problems with purchasing through a responsibile breeder, though. After their issues with NSAL, my parents wanted another dog but were concerned about how the dog would be with the kids. They purchased a purebred collie from a reputable breeder and adopted another from the ASPCA.

in my family, is was NSALA, then a cocker rescue group, then a private rescue from some neglectful neighbors.

We have 2 great danes that were purchased from a responsible breeder that I researched like crazy. It’s partly why I do volunteer work, because I wanted a pure-bred puppy, so I volunteer my time and money to give back. True, I didn’t save the 2 dogs that I live with, but I feel I have saved many many cat’s lives with volunteering (and I have 2 rescue cats!)

Cat 4 - DH brought her home b/c he was throwing something in a dumpster and she jumped out and started rubbing all over his legs

Both my girls are rescues. I think one was NSAL and the other was from Mutt and Lab rescue
