A breeder. We did a lot of research before buying our dog. It was important to us that we used a reputable breeder to get our cocker spaniel.

My black lab is from the Huntington Town Shelter and my German Shelter we rescued through Rescue Dog Village in Alabama.

We got our beloved Mickey from Bideawee in West Hampton.
My sister rescued her cocker spaniel from Town of Islip Shelter.
My brother and SIL have rescued a couple of dogs from Save A Pet in Pt Jeff.

First was a 9 month old local reputable breeder "reject". He didn't have the stuff to be used as a stud dog (that's why the breeder had him) and got passed over, probably due to some behavioral issues he had.
To ease our guilt, we took the price we paid for him and donated the same amount to local rescue groups. (and then some, honestly)
Second time, we looked for Lab rescues outside of NY and found Labs4Rescue. It took us months to find Ginger and have her shipped up here from Texas. She was worth the wait.

An AMAZING rescue organization that pulls dogs from high kill shelters in the south, fosters them and arranges transport up to NY where they are fostered until adoption. Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue. And he is the MOST amazing dog ever!

We got ours from a rescue in CT.
I don't believe in buying dogs, period from a store or from a breeder. There are so many wonderful dogs out there that need to be saved.

NSAL - Even though they do a THOROUGH medical inspection, i was given a pregnant dog that gave birth 2 weeks later. when we called NSAL they said they do not take puppies. They finally agreedto take the puppies, we informed them the puppies have worms and shouldnt be out for adoption yet. By the time we were leaving, we saw one of the puppies in the hands of a little girl!!! We tried to tell the mom, but she looked at us like we were trying to steal her puppy.

Ours was from Craigslist. A woman found him on the street and looked for weeks for his owner. She already had two dogs and was pregnant with their first child, so she couldn't keep him. No fee, but she came over with her husband and talked to us because she wanted to make sure he was getting a good home. He is the best dog!

One from shake-a-paw in hicksville (flame me but I needed a nonshedding hypoallergenic dog and already had bad experience with shelter dog) And the other dog is from a legitimate breeder 5 hrs away.

Very Reputable breeder in South Carolina.
We did research and checked it before buying. When we picked our guy up we saw the loving home he was in with his grandma ;)

Same here.
I've never "bought" a dog, ever.
Both dogs I had were from Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton.
As for NSAL, I've heard really terrible things about them, Little Shelter in Huntington too. It's a shame when even a shelter can't be trusted to have an animal's best interest in mind.
As for those who've purchased from a store, I'm sure you've seen pictures from puppymills posted here. I would urge you to do what you can to reconsider buying a dog from places like that and research where to find the type of dog you're looking for from, at the very least, a reputable breeder.
