Where did you get your dog from?

One from the Town of Brookhaven shelter and the other from Kent Animal Shelter! My cat I got when my son came home from the army with him and then he moved out and the cat stayed. Love all 3 of my pets unconditionally.

As for those who've purchased from a store, I'm sure you've seen pictures from puppymills posted here. I would urge you to do what you can to reconsider buying a dog from places like that and research where to find the type of dog you're looking for from, at the very least, a reputable breeder.

I think the problem is a lot of people don't even know about puppy mills. It's unfortunate because not until recently have they gotten it out in the media, etc more. I made the mistake of getting our first dog from a pet store because I honestly had no idea. It's sad because the public should be made more aware of puppy mills. So many people have no clue. I doubt after having that knowledge that many people would get a puppy from a pet store. If I had known, I wouldn't have. But I have to say that I still love my dog to death and I'm glad we have her.

Our second dog is a rescue. We got him from little shelter in Huntington. I highly recommend them. This poor little guy was rescued from that horrid animal hoarding situation. It was all over the news.

I get not buying from a pet store, but a breeder? I don't see what the issue is. A good breeder has wonderful dogs and I wanted a purebred, well tempered, and healthy cocker. I think rescues are great but it just wasn't the route I wanted to take when looking for a dog. Especially because I wanted a cocker which are notorious puppy mill dogs. I just couldn't trust a cocker from a rescue, I wanted to know the dogs full history. KWIM? Chat Icon

The issue is that animal overpopulation is a huge, huge problem. I don't know how someone could breed dogs when over 1/2 the dogs in shelters don't make it out.

I guess I just don't understand why anyone would need a purebred.

Oftentimes mixed breeds are healthier, as they are less prone to genetic diseases and other conditions.

It just makes me sad.

I understand what you're saying. Chat Icon Personally, I just was not interested in a mixed breed dog. I loved the characteristics of a cocker and I wanted a cocker spaniel, not a cocker mix.

There is something to be said for maintaining a breed too though. If nobody bred, gone would be many of the breeds we have today. I think that's sad too. Chat Icon

I agree. My parents breed and show their dogs. They are extremely responsible. Only breeding healthy dogs, during the proper time period to breed. With the proper characteristics of the breed. To keep the breed up to its standards. They are not out to make money. This is a hobby they love because they love the dogs and the breed. There really is nothing wrong with that.

I feel bad for the shelter pups. But if I want a specific dog, I will go to a trusted breeder. Dog shows are the best ways to find them. Just because they "breed" doesn't mean they are doing it responsibly. There is a lot that goes into it.

Where did you get your dog from?

I knew exactly what breeds I wanted so I researched breeders through the AKC and found two with good reputations. I met the breeders, other people who had dogs from their kennels and made sure I had complete family histories and medical records. I met the parents of each of the puppies I was taking home. Darwin our Mini Schnauzer came from Carolane Miniature Schnauzers in Brookville and our Airdale, Huxley came from Victorianne Airedales in East Williston.... his father placed in the Airedale group in Westminster in 2012.

Where did you get your dog from?

NS and he is the best dog ever
Cats - dumpster, train track rescue from last hope, vets office, and found wandering.

I am all for adopting but it makes me sick when shelters adopt out sick dogs that should be put down. Not mentioning name of place but we adopted an adult shiba inu and when we took her to the vet the next day after bring advised she had had a thorough medical exam we discovered that she had bone cancer that was eating her hips and back legs. We called the shelter and they offered to take her back to adopt her out again. Since she was a purebred they got more of an adoption fee. We had her put to sleep since the vet said she was in extreme pain, Dh and cried and we had the dog for less than 72hrs.

Re: Where did you get your dog from?

Pit bull 1 (passed away at 15) - Huntington Shelter
Lab 1 (passed away at 14) - NSAL
Pit bull 2 (10 yrs old and awesome) - Pit Bull Rescue
Lab 2 (3 yrs old and awesomely still a puppy) - Labs4Rescue

I respect those who go the breeder route - but all our rescues have been wonderful.....so we'll always go that route. As we always say.....it's kind of like they "know" that we saved them - and they're extra loyal and appreciative. Chat Icon

I don't have a dog now , but the one I had when I was younger was abandoned in our neighborhood and we rescued her. Our current cat was a stray living in our neighborhood that we took in.

Re: Where did you get your dog from?

Sadly both of our dogs came from pet stores. This was years ago before I was at all aware of everything that goes on. I love my dogs to death but Im almost mad at myself in a way that I once supported something that I am now so strongly against. But never again.

Rescues. I would never buy a dog from a breeder or a store. I despise both. There are so many animals that need homes out there, I will never understand why there is a need to breed more dogs.

Same here. All our family's pets have been rescues.

It makes me so, so sad to think about people buying dogs from breeders and stores.

A respectable breeder loves the breed and spends years raising and caring for their dogs in order to maintain the breed and it's bloodlines. My breeder was incredible, he lived for his dogs, and I ended up with a beautiful purebred cocker spaniel that is wonderful. He wasn't churning out litters of puppies either just for the sake of selling them, he had a litter only every few months. We didn't pay that much either so it is not like he was making a lot of money doing it.

Not trying to single you out, but I'm just using this type of situation as an example, this can happen to anyone. I think we have a false sense of security by buying a dog from a breeder that they will have a good temperament or fewer health problems than a rescue.

Definitely not a puppy mill, but sounds a lot like a backyard breeder. Those that breed for show spend thousands in genetic testing, testing such as MRI's etc for certain breeds, and actually keep most of the pups and only adopt out non-show quality pups as pets. The fact that this guy breeds every few months to sell the pups is a red flag. The history you got is no better than one you would get from a young cocker from the breed rescue. Did you see the AKC records? How many champions in his bloodline?

I thought my dog was from a reputable breeder but now that I know a lot more about what a show quality, reputable breeder entails I know that she is not from such a place. I love her to pieces but my next will definitely be a rescue.

Where did you get your dog from?

Most "breeders" in places like Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, and Illinois are puppy mills. And if you're buying your dog from a "breeder" who has more than 2 litters a year, it's a backyard breeder. The stress on a dog to have 4 litters a year is unbearable. Poor things. There are TONS of pure bred dogs at shelters.

Where did you get your dog from?

Technically from a breeder. However she bred dashaunds and shih tzus and one day her daughter accident let one of each dog out into the same room, they did it and had "accident" puppies. We adopted one of those, though he was never supposed to exist lol
