Re: Where did you get your dog from?
My dog was from a breeder in west hempstead. (Although I got very lucky with my Bailey, I've heard she ended up breeding a lot of sick dogs. I would not recommend her).
My mom got her dog from a breeder in MA. (her dog is "blue blood"...the sibling from the same litter won best in breed at westminster lol)
Both are yorkies.

Re: Where did you get your dog from?
Breeder in LI. I would have loved to rescue since we always rescued cats growing up. Unfortunately due to my DHs asthma and allergies, I could not adopt a dog and chance that it could have had a more allergenic breed background that we might have been unaware of (eta - b/c I could never have given up a dog that I adopted, it would have crushed me to do that to the dog and would not have been able to handle that).

Rescues. I would never buy a dog from a breeder or a store. I despise both. There are so many animals that need homes out there, I will never understand why there is a need to breed more dogs.
Same here. All our family's pets have been rescues.
It makes me so, so sad to think about people buying dogs from breeders and stores.

We don't have dogs, but our cats are all rescues.
Warning...graphic below...but I am very passionate about this... When I see pictures of the piles of dead dog and cat bodies lying in garbage cans outside of shelters every morning or the poor, innocent faces that are about to be slaughtered, it makes me so sad that more people do not get their pets from shelters/rescue groups.

Re: Where did you get your dog from?
my dog came through my in-laws. A customer of theirs did not want their dog. Man bought dog for his wife to keep other dog company. Woman did not want dog. He bought dog for her for Christmas from a local pet store. My in-laws bought dog from him and gave him to me as an engagement present. They saw how much I wanted him. My in-laws take in dogs that others do not want.

ITA! I never understood why someone would buy an animal, so many homeless dogs and cats that need homes.

Re: Where did you get your dog from?
my dog from childhood was from bid-a-way (or whatever it was called in wantagh), my cats: 4 were from the street, 1 from a rescue organization, my turtles: all rescues from LI turtle rescue.
I would never buy a pure breed or a store animal unless for allergy reasons.

Re: Where did you get your dog from?
My childhood dog was thrown out of a car in a snow storm and we scooped her up and took her home. Best dog ever!! All of the cats we ever had were strays found on the streets as kittens. As an adult I adopted 2 brother kittens from NSAL...loved them to pieces but were very sickly and both passed away at young ages after costing me thousands!! Would enver go there again. Would take my chances from the street anyday!

Re: Where did you get your dog from?
We were specifically looking for a hypoallergenic puppy, and couldn't risk adopting and not knowing 100% the breed of dog. Therefore we used a breeder right here on LI who had the parents on her property and bread the puppies in her home. We actually found her in the paper. We did look at Northshore and saw lots of great puppies, but there was no gaurantee of their breed. Otherwise we could have adopted.
I wouldn't trust ANY of the puppy/pet stores...I know too many people that have had problems buying from that type of place. I would only ever buy a dog from a reputable breeder after meeting the parents and seeing the living conditions of the puppies.

Where did you get your dog from?
Every dog I've ever had has either been from a shelter or a foundling. I will never pay for a dog other than shelter fees- I am just not into specific breeds.

Re: Where did you get your dog from?
My friend found him wandering the streets in her neighborhood with no ID and only a flea collar on. She posted flyers and contacted all around and had him for a month - no one claimed him! I said the first day that she found him that he was tiny enough for my home and it was love at first sight... But I thought for sure someone was looking for him.
Turns out... It was me!

A respectable breeder loves the breed and spends years raising and caring for their dogs in order to maintain the breed and it's bloodlines. My breeder was incredible, he lived for his dogs, and I ended up with a beautiful purebred cocker spaniel that is wonderful. He wasn't churning out litters of puppies either just for the sake of selling them, he had a litter only every few months. We didn't pay that much either so it is not like he was making a lot of money doing it.
I get not buying from a pet store, but a breeder? I don't see what the issue is. A good breeder has wonderful dogs and I wanted a purebred, well tempered, and healthy cocker. I think rescues are great but it just wasn't the route I wanted to take when looking for a dog. Especially because I wanted a cocker which are notorious puppy mill dogs. I just couldn't trust a cocker from a rescue, I wanted to know the dogs full history. KWIM?

Re: Where did you get your dog from?
I agreed to 'foster' a puppy for a friend who runs a rescue. It was supposed to be short term because I did not think we'd be good dog parents.
But we fell in love. And he's just a part of our family now.. our 3rd son!

The issue is that animal overpopulation is a huge, huge problem. I don't know how someone could breed dogs when over 1/2 the dogs in shelters don't make it out.
I guess I just don't understand why anyone would need a purebred.
Oftentimes mixed breeds are healthier, as they are less prone to genetic diseases and other conditions.
It just makes me sad.

I understand what you're saying. Personally, I just was not interested in a mixed breed dog. I loved the characteristics of a cocker and I wanted a cocker spaniel, not a cocker mix.
There is something to be said for maintaining a breed too though. If nobody bred, gone would be many of the breeds we have today. I think that's sad too.

Re: Where did you get your dog from?
I don't have dogs, but I have cats.
The first one I rescued from a shelter and she was about a year old (not sure of exact age).
The second I adopted as a kitten from a foster.
I got the first two in Australia where euthanasia is sadly done. I flew them with me when I moved to Germany. It wasn't cheap, but I love them and couldn't imagine leaving them behind. Luckily, I didn't have to deal with quarantine. If we ever move back to Australia, then we will have to deal with quarantine. I don't see moving back happening.
The third I got from a reputable British Shorthair breeder. I struggled with the idea of getting a purebred, but I felt better because in Germany it's no kill and euthanasia for space reasons is illegal. I've had cats my whole life and have rescued many, but I still felt guilt getting a purebred. I got a purebred for my own selfish reasons and I just fell in love with the breed. Plus they also don't shed as much.
I also think it's OK if you get it from a reputable breeder, but not pet stores. The breeder is doing it to insure great blood lines. That being said, it's a shame that pet overpopulation exists . I think a lot of that comes from irresponsible pet ownership.
