Re: Where should WE live/look for a house?
As some pp mentioned, I would recommend Rockville Centre. Extremely convenient to NYC by train, nice little town with shops, restaurants, bars, etc. and good school district. I would also look into Garden City, Merrick, and Bellmore.

I think rvc and port Washington are both perfect for you! Train from rvc is 35 mins. Pt wash train line is far and away the best bc it doesn't run thru Jamaica.

Re: Where should WE live/look for a house?
I am going to put in a plug for Lynbrook. Definitely safe. Wife feels safe walking alone at night. I've walked home at 1am. Good schools. Also easy to find a house that's walking distance to LIRR. Has a very "old town" feel. Relatively easy to get to JFK and Queens.
Some of the houses are not as nice as the houses in Rockville Centre but you will get more for your money on Lynbrook. For 600k you may even be able to get a 4th bedroom.
Only negative (if you consider this one) is that it is not very ethnically diverse.

Hello all. Thank you for the replies. I am surprised at some of the places mentioned, I would have thought the list would be along the lines of: Roslyn, Manhasset, Kings Point, Sands Point, Port Washington, Great Neck
I think Manhasset, Sands point and Kings point are not possible for $600,000 or anywhere close to that to get what you are looking for.
I would look at Port Washington, Mahasset Hills (New Hyde Park) and Garden City.

Beth posted a website on another thread that can help you find what town suits your needs.

ETA I live in North Merrick and fulfills all your requirements.
I live in North Merrick as well, moved here a few weeks ago. Honestly, we love it. Schools are great, neighborhood is extremely safe and walkable. We are less than 5 minutes from the train station, close to all the major highways.
Just wanted to add about the schools..there are no buses in the district, which is both a blessing and a curse The good part is you can meet a lot of the parents of other children and get to know them, and the curse is the amount of time it takes out of your day to pick them up.

Re: Where should WE live/look for a house?
Also wanted to add my gf lives in great neck and is moving out to Bellmore.
There have been strings of unsolved robberies there, as well as someone getting attacked by a gunman VERY close to her house. I know these things happen randomly but shes in a nice part of GN and I don't feel safe there at night because of the incidents above.

Great Neck is a very safe place. Robberies can happen anywhere. The idea of GN being anymore unsafe then anywhere else in LI is silly IMO.

600,000 would be tight in Manhasset Hills and also GC. You could possibly find something in PW for 600s.

First off, thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
Where does your gf live? You don't have to give the exact address.
But I heard that South GN (around the LIRR station) is a better area than North GN (north of the village area.
Looking at open houses, I noticed 3 house being sold on the same street in South GN. Good location too, about a 15 minute walk to the station

While this is usually true I noticed in the local paper that there are quite a few homes in GC right now in the 500-600K range.

Re: Where should WE live/look for a house?
About $600K being tight in certain areas, such as Garden City, Manhasset, etc. -- I think it also depends on what kind of home you expect to buy.
There is no way you will find a home in mint condition in Garden City, or a lot of the other areas mentioned, for $600K. I have customers who were interested in Port Washington with a $750K budget, and I've been checking out the inventory. You can get a smaller home, such as a cape, or a more dated home (without updated bathrooms, kitchens, CAC, etc.). But to get a larger home, such as a colonial, on a non-main road location, you have to spend more.
My DH is from Garden City and his family still lives there. Again, in certain areas, you can get a smaller home for $600K or one that needs some work. But that same $600K will buy you a bigger house and a mint condition house in Merrick or Bellmore (which is why we ultimately bought in Bellmore!).
I don't think there's a wrong or right choice - but it's just a matter of having the right expectations going in of what your dollar buys i a certain town/area.

I know i'm just saying whats currently going on there. I live in Bellmore and I can tell you i didn't feel "safe" when there was a lunatic attacking women as they were getting out of their cars in their driveways. Thankfully they caught that psycho but the GN robber is still out there. Thats all i'm saying since safety is a concern.
To the OP looking in Great Neck, she is 2 blocks south of the train sta.

Re: Where should WE live/look for a house?
I am from queens and we looked in bayside, little neck, and douglaston. Those would be my top choices. In Nassau I would choose great neck or manhasset. Anything further may be a tough commute depending on where in NYC your wife works.
My inlaws live in fresh meadows and I dont feel too safe there. We moved further east in Nassau bc our budget was 500k or less.

Re: Where should WE live/look for a house?
i live in Port Washington and work on Wall St. yes, the commute is great...but Port is very far from what i am used too from living in other towns..target..malls, highways/parkways...its just a pita getting out of port....if you are ok with being self contained, port is great, i love it, i just miss shopping and having options, its just such a pain to get out of here and hit shopping centers...I used to live in douglaston and i think that is the best of all worlds, easy access, great commute, yada, yada....

Re: Where should WE live/look for a house?
I agree with the other posters, manhasset and great neck are probably out of your budget if you want a nice sized 3 bedroom. When we were looking, we looked along the north shore--whitestone, bayside, douglaston, little neck, great neck, and manhasset. When I realized I wanted more space, I compromised on the commute and we ultimately decided on East Hills (right next to Roslyn & Manhasset). I'm SO glad I did....my neighbors are great, we all came from the city, and there are so many great kids events run by the village.
I take an express bus from Manhasset/Roslyn ((christopher morley park) BUT that is really for a 9-5 job so it probably won't be good for your wife.
Good luck in your search. I would recommend waiting a litttle more and saving more money to stick to the towns you mentioned.
ETA: my gf just bought a house in Manhasset ...3 bdrms there in the decent area are going for $1M+ they all go for above asking even in this economy.
Also, city data was a great resource for us with respect to researching neighborhoods...has all the info re: sex offenders etc.

Re: Where should WE live/look for a house?
I am very familiar with these areas and looked to buy in 1 of them a few years ago. From what I remember for 600k you will get a pretty small home in need of work or like the above poster said, an attached or semi-attached that would also probably need work. Queens is very very expensive!
