I am sorry if I sound ignornat but $5000 on a bedroom set sounds reasonable. Maybe I am in the dark on furniture prices.
From what we priced out today that is reasonable. Thomasville wanted between $5000- $7600 without the headboard/footboard. I have a lot of furniture from them and it's heirloom quality. You'd be surprised if you catch a sale there they are not too much more than other places.
Personally I didn't care for Ashley style or quality. We walked in today, I opened a drawer and walked right out. IMO the quality was horrible. Some other companies that I consider quality are Hooker, American Drew, Ethan Allen & Fairmont Designs. I truly believe with furniture you get what you pay for.

Re: Where to buy good quality bedroom funiture?
we have penneys furniture and its solid wood, and FANTASTIC quality, has held up like a champ to a toddler. We have pricier furniture too that is chipped from another place. I think anything can nick and chip, unless its made of diamonds.

Re: Where to buy good quality bedroom funiture?
My bedroom and kitchen are HOOKER and my dining room is American Drew. Definitely not cheap but good quality wood furniture. If you want to save money, I would skip buying a wood bed frame. I would go for an upholstered headboard (Target) or an iron one... this will def save you some $$$. Also I am more of a minimalist when it comes to bedroom furniture, I dont think you need to have 5 pieces to have a nice set. I would go for quality first and if you need to add pieces later you can...may just get a dresser, mirror and 2 end tables... if you need more storage you could always get a bench for the foot of your bed??

Def. check out Ashley. I think they have really good quality stuff and their prices are pretty good too. We bought our bedroom furniture at Tiffany Furniture on Rt. 110 next to R&F. Oh and Ashley just opened a new store on Rt.110 in Farmingdale, near R&F. GL!
And aren't Ashley's furniture made to order?

Re: Where to buy good quality bedroom funiture?
We bought ours from Raymour. The set we liked would have cost us close to 5k too. however we just bought the furniture without the mattress and matress pad because we felt that we would be able to buy that cheaper elsewhere instead of going with their package
We got the headboard, footboard rails, 2 night stands, mirror dresser and chest. It would have cost 2700.00 but since we opted to get the raymour and flanagan card and pay it in full once we got the bill, they were willing to discount it more. ( I think because they know they are getting their money instead of those credit cards that say no interest until 2013)
anyways it cost us 2300.00. So if you can afford to pay it in full then its worth it. you save more. Then we went to sleepys and bought the same mattress they had raymour for 1200.00 cheaper.

We paid about $5000 for our Thomasville set- sleigh bed, 2 nightstands, long dresser and armoire. Check them out when they are having sales. It's great quality and you might be surprised at the prices.

Quality is based more on the brand rather than the store that sells it. Raymour carries a variety of lines. The best they have in there is probably Bernhardt.
ITA with this. I used to work for Bloomingdales as a furniture assistant buyer and stores like Raymour, Macy's and Bloomies, all carry many mfgs. Try finding a brand you like and then shop around for the best price.

Re: Where to buy good quality bedroom funiture?
I have had my bedroom set for over three years now (JC Penney Home Store) and it is Chris Madden. Not sure if her line of stuff is 'better' than their other stuff but we don't have a single chip or anything - all of our drawers are lined with a nice felt-like material. Their wood is so solid and nice. We love it. We have a bed (wood headboard, footboard), dresser with mirror, tall dresser, and two nightstands.
We get a lot of compliments on the style - I really love Chris Madden's stuff.
Total was less than $2,500 with tax delivery and everything.
