which home improvement project would you pick first

just need some advice as to which home improvement project if given a choice you would think would have more priority:

-new siding or a new fence?

our siding is old aluminum and the paint is now dripping onto the brick (we have a split which is mostly brick with siding on top)

and our fence is an old wood stockade fence falling apart.

we would probably only have money to do one for now but stuck on which one would probably be best, thought i'd ask for advice in a WWYD type of situation.

Thanks!

Re: which home improvement project would you pick first

we did a new fence during the summer...and it made the house look soooooo nice.

That being said, our siding isn't bad, just not what we want. I would think if it were bad, and falling apart per say, I would do the siding first!

Good luck!

Siding, because it will save you money in the long run. I know fences are annoying and can be an ear sore when they get broken, but maybe you can salvage what's there by replacing some of the slats (if it's a wood fence) or painting? HTH

Siding -- I think that has more effect on the curb appeal of the house. If the exterior of the house looks well maintained, it gives the impression that the entire house is well cared for.

I agree with the pp about the fence -- maybe you can take some stop gap measures to make it look cosmetically better, but postpone getting a new one.

Do you have children? I think that if you do and are concerned about safety (maybe a space in the fence or a section falling), I would definitely get a new fence 1st. If not, I would do what would make you happier in the short run. Maybe do the fence 1st so it detracts from the siding being old and the the siding next year.

I would say siding unless you NEED the fence like pp said for kids/pets.

Def siding.

If you're going to do the fence eventually do it in the winter, you save a FORTUNE that way Chat Icon

Siding first. Then the fence. As people said you will get more out of the siding then the fence.

I'd do the siding since you may be able to DIY the fence.

Re: which home improvement project would you pick first

siding - we have original 1950s cedar shake and are so desperate to get new siding. Firstly, you have pests that can enter your home if you have really old siding. Secondly, if anyone is going to look and make a comment on something it would be the siding/look of the house not a fence. Finally, siding is more of an investment then fencing.
