Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
Hi everyone:
Can you tell me where you live in Queens, how you get into work and how long it takes you? We're beginning to think about where we might want to move to (well, I am anyway! ) and am trying to scope out a few different places.
Thanks!

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
I live in Forest Hills, but actually may be moving soon! Forest Hills has a lot of commuting options to Manhattan.
I work in midtown and take the express bus in the morning. The bus is 2 blocks away from my co-op and the commute is generally 30 - 40 minutes depending on what time you go. The earlier buses (8:00 and earlier) are quicker than the buses after 8:00. Going home on the express bus can be a little longer and again depends on which bus you take.
Going home, I take the subway. I live 2 blocks away from a local stop, but the next stop is an express (E and F). I take either the express or the local. The E train from Forest Hills to the first stop in Manhattan (53rd and Lex) is about a half hour. And, the local subway does not add too much more time to my commute.
There also is a LIRR stop in Forest Hills and it's about 15 minutes to Penn Station.
HTH and let me know if you have more questions!

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
I live in NYC, but my sister lives on the border of Astoria and Long Island City (R train to 46th St) and it takes her less than 30 mins to get to my office at Penn Station.

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
I live in Maspeth and take a bus to the V train in LIC (bus also passes by the 7 train in LIC) and door to door it takes me about 40 min to get to work in midtown.
I used to live in Sunnyside, and it took about 20 min on the 7 train to midtown. I loved Sunnyside...(for many reasons, not just the commute).
I'm moving to western suffolk in about 2 weeks, and my commute will go to an hour and a half...dont know how I'll get used to it!

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
I live in Kew Gardens. I used to take the subway in but now that I'm pregnant I take the express bus. I had to switch from the E to the 6 (51st & Lex) which took about 45 minutes or the E to the 7 (Roosevelt) which took about an hour. At my last job I could take the E train straight in and that took about 30-35 minutes.
The express bus rocks. I take the x63/x64/x68 from the last stop to 42nd & 3rd. That takes 30 minutes tops.
There is also the LIRR in Kew Gardens. It's 16 minutes into Manhattan.

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
I live in Howard Beach- not so many options where I am- I take the A train, but there's also an express bus to NYC.
I work in Jersey City, so my commute takes about an hour and 10 minutes to an hour and a half (depending how the trains are running).
I take the A train to Chambers Street and transfer to the PATH train at WTC.
Before I got promoted I was in the financial district and took the A to Broadway/Nassau- it would usually take 40-50 minutes.

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
I live in Bay Terrace
I take the express bus- the QM2A
it stops across the street from my house and it's about 45/60 minutes to midtown depending on the traffic
coming home I take the super express- which stops 3 houses down from me- and it takes 45 minutes max
it's really not bad- I took the LIRR- it took the same amount of time- when I added in parking- and it's more $$$ and a longer walk to my office

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
I used to live in Jackson heights and could take the bus to the train or walk to the 7 train. Since I worked in midtown it was probably an hour door to door only because the E or F train always had a delay.

I grew up in Bayside. The LIRR takes about 25 minutes. I also lived in Ridgewood, and it took about an hour by subway.

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
When we still lived in Forest Hills, DH was commuting to midtown, right near Penn. He took the R or V and transferred to the E at Roosevelt Ave. It took him about half an hour to get in to Penn, and then he had a 10 min. walk to work.
When i was going to school in downtown Manhattan, I would take the R straight down and it took an hour. If I felt like transferring to the E, it took me 45 min. or so.

Thanks! We are in Middle Village Quens. My DH works in Manhattan . He takes the express bus just 2 blocks away from our place. takes him about 40-45min or so . When I was working I used to take the bus to Woodhaven blvd train station and take the R to Manhattan. Used to take me about 35-40 min(not including the bus ride). There is also M train close to us ,that also takes you to Manhattan, depending where you are going I guess it could take anywhere between 40 min to 1 hr or so. I guess it depends where in Queens you live and where in Manhattan you work.

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
I live in MV and used to travel to Manhattan each day.
Express Bus to 57th Street/6th Ave was about a 1 hour commute (that's walking 7 blocks to the bus stop, getting into manhattan then wrapping all the west on 34th street then north on 8th finally east on 57th 3 avenues
Or I would take the local bus, to the 7 train, transfer to the F --- about 45 minutes
Once I was pregnant I was working on 40th/6th and I would drive to Vernon/Jackson, hop on the 7 train for 2 stops and walk through Bryant Park - 35 min commute!

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
when I lived in Fresh Meadows it was express bus about 45 mins in the am and about 60 going home. The express is great but it also depends on your stop in the city. If you work by 57th Street, it could be longer in the morning since the bus has to travel through the city
When I commuted from Whitestone it was the express bus again and that was about 35 mins in the am and about 45-55 going home.
I've also driven to Shea to get the 7 train, probably door to door was under an hour
I've never lived in walking distance of a subway, if you want that than an area like Forest Hills, Astoria is better for you

This is my commute exactly.
There is also an express bus that runs along Northern Blvd. Plus there's the city bus to Flushing/Subway option. I only did that once - it took way too long.
Good luck

I live in Little Neck & I have to take a bus to the LIRR (bus is 15 min to the train) (parking is expensive in the lirr parking lot) and the train ride itself is 35 min.

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
I lived in Ozone Park and when I worked downtown I would take the A train. Took me about 35 - 45 minutes. Their were Express buses but none of them went to where I worked.
When I moved in with DH (we were engaged at the time) we lived in Glendale and I was still working Downtown I would take the M train to Broadway/Nassua and would walk a few blocks to my office. If it was really cold or terrible weatherI would hop the 2 train one stop because when I would get out I would be right outside my office.
When we lived in Glendale and I was working in mid-town I would take the Express bus. LOVED it. The bus stop was less then 1 block from where we lived and was right across the street from my mid-town office.

Re: Who lives in Queens and commutes to NYC?
We used to live in Long Island City, the westernmost part of queens, right on the east river. We were a 5 minute walk to the 7 train (vernon jackson stop) and it was a 4 minute trip to Grand Central.
I miss that commute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in Glen Oaks and drive 10 mins to the Douglaston LIRR which gets me into Penn in 30mins. From there, I walk 2 blocks to my job.
